Can tape be recycled?

I have started my spring clean early and I have a considerable number of video and audio cassettes I no longer need. They are all VHS and standard audio - no exotic formats. I have others I will be keeping but the junk has got to go!

Rather than send them to landfill, is there any method of recycling them and how would I go about this? I don't suppose schools, charities etc would want them - or would they?

Otherwise it will have to be landfill.

Thanks

It's worth looking at this thread concerning options for tape recycling:

Offer them on your local Freecycle web site.

have you got a model plane club nearby? They may be interested.

When I used to fly planes we used them for tape cutting / dogfight games.

i.e. everyone would tie a long length of video tape behind their aerobatic plane and then fly them at the same time to try to cut each others tape with your propeller.

used to provide some spectacular near misses.
