Transferring Ipod Library
MarkElkington
11-03-2008
Up until now I've used my Ipod with my old G4 ibook. I now want to connect it to my works PC and start updating it here instead. Is it possible to install the latest iTunes, and use the old .xml file that is the iTunes library to save me moving all the mp3 files on to the new PC?

Alternatively, is there any software that would take the tracks off the iPod onto the new PC, or generate a librray based on whats on the iPod now?

I'll burn everything to DVD's and do it the hard way if I have to, but I'd rather not...

Regardless of how you transfer the library database you'll still have to transfer the music files. This can be done by either connecting the machines, using software to retrieve them from your iPod, setting your iPod to disk mode and moving them across that way or whatever method people can think of. the xml file itself is just the database, if you just had that you'd have the entries but a load of !'s next to all your songs.

I used Ipod2PC software to load up my new laptop with the music from my desktop. Costs around a tenner or you could use the trial version but it will take you ages.
google ipod2PC.

Fantastic software. Used it tonight to transfer over 5,400 songs, music videos and playlists to my Itunes library from my 80gb Ipod Video. Would have taken me endless days to do this manually. A great time saver and it works !!

A bargain at £12.50!

don't think that works on the ipod touch, which I believe has to be jailbroken to transfer stored tunes back to your pc

unless anyone else knows differently ?

You can just choose to update the iPod manually...which wont touch the exsisting songs on it at all, and you can use it on as many computers as you can.
It may be Mac formatted though...
