Nice account.

You might want to add a couple of comments.

1. Strictly speaking, this mod invalidates the warranty. With older machines, the mod can be reversed without it being noticeable. Newer machines have a sticker to prevent access to the interior, though it *may* be possible to remove and replace this safely.

2. The length of the IDE cable may matter. (The first cable I got, which was long, did not work, as the hard disk failed to be recognised).

Good job - nicely explained - but if you want the keep the downloads on HDD - just use VLC to play the unchanged *.ts files - it works for me. If you eventually want to burn them to DVD use something like VideoReDo to trim, de-ad, and burn.

1. yes, the warranty, that should be noted, of course!
2. aah, the one i have should be fine, what length was the one that failed? is there a known IDE cable length limit?

yes, i can just use videolan to play them on the laptop, for sure, i just upgrade to the latest version of that and it was better than the version i had (naturally!) and it performs very well.

however, i like to make dvd's, so i can switch off my 500w+ noisy pc and watch it on the big tele from the sofa..so i tend to convert to mpg, then to dvd.

VLC converts to mpg seemingly without a hitch (i've only done a few so far) and then i use VSOconvertxtodvd which i really like. it's very fast and tho you can't manually place chapters, you can set one to drop every 2 mins, which i have found is sufficient. before that i used to use NeroVisionExpress, which does an awful lot but is a bit slow. the menu creation is very extensive on that, if that's important to you.

i tend to find that if the program is not that important and i will prob chuck the dvd after watching (or give it to someone), then i just make very basic menu..

why o why humax couldn't have simply set the 9200T to do all this out of the box is crazy!

(no doubt this question has been asked a few times!)

thanks for the replies

regards

The one that did not work was, I think (it was a long time ago) 80 cm long, the one that did work was 40 cm. Of course, length might not have been the issue, but I think it was.

one thing to mention is that the HD will take a few seconds to spin up, so if you are like me and get impatient after 2 seconds, waiting for the client app to recognise the drive..

take a breath and try again and it should be fine

Just a quick question -

Does anyone know of alternative sources for the IDE extension cable?

I have ordered the IDE-USB dooberry, and hoped that I could get the other bits from Farnell (their owners also own CPC, or something like that)... Unfortunately I cannot find this cable there. Also, I cannot see anything on Maplin website (my other real alternative). I do not want to pay a £6 order handling fee for a £2 order, so prefer sources that either my work has an account with, or that I can visit in person!

Thanks
Alex

OK, I think I have got one from LeadsDirect (through my work, so p+p is free for me!) - the part number here is IDEX. It is a bit more expensive than getting it from CPC, and the shipping would be expensive if it was all you were getting... There must be a better place to get these components from?!
