i bought a Thor 2-way 'automatic' HDMI switch to switch between 2 Samsung DVD players - a blu-ray and an upscaling conventional player about 2 years old. doesn't work! the old player can't seem to grab the circuit, it will only work if the switch is operated manually, which is not what i want as it needs to be hidden.

am i wasting my time in sourcing an alternative?

Is there an option to turn on HDMI control in the Menu of the upscaling DVD? if so make sure it's on.

Trouble with HDMI is that there is nothing as nice and simple as the pin 8 switching signal in a SCART connection. Nice and easy, there is either a voltage on the pin or there isn't. Easy to detect and easy to make a switch respond to it.

HDMI does have a control channel in the spec, but that doesn't mean anyone has to use it! Plus it is rather more complex than a simple volt/no volts switch. it can be used for other things as well. Which can't make designing an auto switch very easy.

This might sound crazy but it may simply be a case of switching things on in the right order to force a handshake.

Firstly try switching on the player then the TV, if that does not work try the TV first & then the player. It might not work but is worth a try.

thanks for another good idea to try, but no joy.

i've seen now that if the old player is on and connected to the TV (by manual operation of the HDMI switch) then the newer blu-ray player will not sieze the connection if it is then switched on (which is not a problem just an observation!)

if, however, the old player is then switched off, the already on blu ray player will then cause the HDMI switch to operate automatically and switch the circuit. i deduce from this that whatever the new player is doing to automatically operate the switch (which the old player isn't doing) it does not appear to be the action of powering up that works the switch.

I'm guessing it might be something to do with the Earlier player having an older version of HDMI or possibly it may not have the most recent Firmware? the only other thing I can think of that might be worth a try is swapping the HDMI leads around to se if it makes a difference. If not good luck & hope you find a solution, Regards, Paul.

i tried swapping the leads pretty early on!

you may, however, be on to something with the firmware. when i first bought it i downloaded and installed an older version of the firmware that would permit upscaling through the component outputs, which the factory installed version would not do without an HDCP handshake through HDMI. i won't go into why i did that but it seemed like a good idea at the time!

i recall when i did it there was no going back as the current version was not available for download anywhere but that may have changed, so it's worth looking into.

many thanks Paul for your suggestions.
