TV about to go bang?

Hi,
My CRT philips TV makes a very high pitched noise when on - either using a Freeview box through Scart or DVD through Scart. I have tried different cables, but this noise randomly comes and goes and different cables and settings on TV menu make no difference. It is not the 'natural' high pitched noise that it used to make.

I can also see the CRT tube glowing orange in the back of the TV and today it has made a couple of loud static noises like old TVs used to make when they turned off and the screen goes to a white dot and then instantly switches back on.

Any comments - is an orange CRT tube safe?

Many Thanks in advance

For what it is worth I had a telly that whined, got really hot and the tube glowed orange.
It burst into flames shortly after.

Sounds to me that the EHT supply is stressed. So it will not last long. TV engineer

All CRT's glow orange at their base its where the filament heater is. If it is glowing like a 60 watt light bulb then yes there is something wrong and you can look to an early demise of the CRT. Contrary to the other poster the risk of fire is no more than that from a light bulb that has gone "Overbright" at the end of its life.

People forget that the CRT is a special variant and the only variant still in common use of the thermionic valve (or vacuum tube as our US cousins called them). 40 years ago or more all TV's had around 15-20 of these beasties in them.

I'm not sure if this is the same problem as yours..but my old Sanyo 28" CRT (five years old) made a horrible whistling noise from time to time so I got an engineer to have a look..he told me that on most CRT TV's they have a little moulded cylinder with twisted copper wire (not sure what this is called) can become lose and starts to make a kind of annoying intermittant whistling noise the guy showed me what this component looked like and what he was doing, he kept tapping this component at the back of the set with a pen to see if would make the noise I was complaining about, and it didn't happen, always the way..so he couldn't do anything because he couldn't identify any problem, he said the only way the noise would stop is buy removing the circuit board and replacing it with a new one because all the seperate curcuits/components are moulded on to the one board, he also said that the problem will get worse over time and the TV would have to be taken away to be fixed and would cost a bit of money..I thought it was too much hassle and cost..not sure how much of what he told me was true or whether he was spinning me a yarn..but it sounds very simular to your TV's problem..in the end I bought a new TV a Philips 24" CRT Widescreen to replace the Sanyo for my bedroom.

Miy older Sanyo TV never burst into flames or glowed orange though..

I used to have a Toshiba 21" TV that made a noise very similar to what you're describing. used to just randomly make a high pitch noise. I hadnt had it all that long, or used it all that much either.

It also had a number of other faults, it stopped responding to remote commands (tried original remote, and several universal remotes, which I knew used to work) and the tuner went to pot - so I could only watch stuff via scart lead.

I dunno about the tube glowing orange? I didnt notice that! I replaced it as soon as I could afford to.
