It's probably been done before, but for what it's worth here's mine.

1 Jimmy Hendrix

2 Frank Zappa

3 Ritchie Blackmore.

Just like the other 'Greatest/Best' threads, this is subjective to people's opinions and tastes in music. So imo none of those, Brian May, Steve Harris or Alex Lifeson would be in my list.

In no particular order. Alex Lifeson,Dave Mustaine and Dave Gilmour.
Mustaines so under rated in my opinion. The chord structures and progressions he dreams up are amazing.I'm not really a fan of their music now but as a guitarist he's a God.Alex Lifeson STILL puts too many guitar solo's into a song after all these years.
Ok here goes.........Hendrix is a great guitarist. His timing and rhythm are beautiful.I've said it for ever and I'll say it again,he was a sloppy player.Perfection was never his strong point.Saying that, I wish I could play like him rather than how I play

To me there is more to guitar playing than speed and shredding solos

David Gilmour, less is better at times.

Nick Drake, a stunning acoustic player.

George Harrison (maybe a strange choice for some, not the most technically brilliant of guitarists but just think of the amount of riffs you know that have come from him)

Maybe not the greatest Guitarists but Stuart Adamson and John mcgeogh both had very individual styles that you instantly recognised.
Honourable mention to James Dean Bradfield

very good call. I *think* he won the NME's recent public vote of best guitarist ever, which is a bit much but it's a nice bit of recognition as he is superb

mention to matt bellamy, his skill on guitar and piano and his knowledge and application of effects is astounding

I don't know how to pick a top 3 because as a poster above says taste comes into and many are as accomplished as each other.

But one of my favourite guitarists is John McGeoch.

Can't think of any to be honest.

For me it's:

Prince
David Gilmour
Steve Vai

Is anyone adding these up or is ot one of those endless threads with 100 names put down?

B B King (per Eric Clapton) - epitomised the electric blues, perhaps even greater than Robert Johnson, who was the best blues guitarist recorded in the early era of blues

Jimi hendrix - arch experimenter, made the guitar make sounds that nobody else was doing, not only clever but fast, very fast, the most influential innovator on the guitar of the 20th century. admired by pretty much all the guitarists of his generation - Clapton, Townshend - all the British beat/r&b guitarists admired what he accomplished - went on to inspire two generations of rock/blues fans.
Miles Davis, arguably one of the top 5 jazz musicians of the last 100 years planned to record a collaborative album with Jimi and that would most likely have been the best jazz-rock album ever made.

who should be the other guitarist?

John Williams? classical intepreter. Sky may have sounded a bit boring, but there is no denying that John Williams (remember "cavatina - theme from the Deer Hunter"?) was/is a master musician.

Richard Thompson - almost certainly Britain's top folk guitarist and has been for 40 years (Davey Graham may argue about that, but Graham's international acclaim is less than Thompson's)

Django Reinhart? - Belgian gypsy jazz guitarist - part of the Hot Club of Paris Quintette along with Stephane Grapelli
- astoundingly fast.

I think the Holy Trinity of Guitar music should involve

1. the top blues guiatrist
2. the top rock guitarist
3. the top jazz guitarist

problem is, that classical and folk guitar doesn't grab people as much, but the guitar has strands of performance - and with the very best, they could probably have excelled at other genres. look at Eddie Van Halen - "eruption" - how far from classical is that? not as far as many people would think.

I don't dislike him at all, but frankly it was just silly to name him 'best ever' - just shows what a bunch of silly sheep enter NME polls.

wouldn't be surprised if in some of these polls the question is posed like -
who is the best ever guitarist?

pianist elton john
michael 'wacko' jackson
The manic Street Preacher's amazing james dean bradfield

TEXT
elton john who I want to make babies with and think has really nice hair in a trichological-type artifical way

for grumpy piano thumper elton john

TEXT
michael jackson the man in the mirror who is celebrating the twenty fifth year of his classic album thriller and who was formerly a member of successful quintet the jackson five

for acquitted alleged sex-pervert michael jackson

TEXT
James

for brilliant james d Bradfield of the manics

If only people knew that the guy who wrote the Star Wars theme could also play the guitar. Like a god.

Slash isn't particularly good but he's supercool so he'll always get votes (he is my favourite guitarist, not my favourite guitar player).

Tom Morello is the new inventor...the new Hendrix/Van Halen if you will.

Steve Vai and Joe Satriani have taken playing to a whole other level - some like, some frown. There's no disputing their genius though.

Eric Johnson, Paul Gilbert and Yneugwie (!!??!?) Malmsteen are technically brilliant also...

The guys from Dragonforce play faster than your ears can hear.

There's the classic rock legends like Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi and Pete Townshend who are not in the same league as people like Tom Morello but came up with the classic rock / metal sound almost on their own.

This could run and run...

I'm a guitarist and have a huge collection of "guitarists" albums.Morello to me is just noise and effects rather than a really skillful player.
