Firstly I readily admit that I'm a complete tech-moron ..... volts /ohms / watts / amps/coaxial /optical are all gobble-de-gook to me

After only 14 years me Philips 21" Tele blew -up

So I have just taken delivery of a Samsung LE37M86BD LCD television...... no sniggering please

I want to add an amplifier and speakers to create a home entertainment system

Not having a clue I bought a copy of What Hi-fi .... So now I am looking to purchase the ONkyo TX-SR505 Amplifier and the QAcoustics 1010i 5.1 speaker system

What Hi-Fi Magazine class this as a "Budget" entertainment system ...... but to me its an expensive out-lay

From what I've read ..... the speaker cable needs to be a good quality and compatible with the performance of the amplifier and speakers

Question What type of speaker cable do I use

Use a decent thickness muti-strand cable, but there's absolutely no good reason to spend more than £1/metre.

Maplin Electronics do some good stuff, I'd post a link but their site seems to be having trouble.

Edit: here it is, but it's gone up! £1.29/m

I agree it is not worth spending a fortune on AV speaker cable & most of the ones recommended will be fine BUT I can whole heartedly recommend this; QED MICRO SILVER ANNIVERSARY

The Micro version will be perfect for what you need & can be picked up for around £2 to £3 a metre, the added clarity & detail you will hear is like upgrading the Amplifier! when I changed mine from a fairly well known standard brand I could hardly believe I was listening to the same system. Vocals became far more defined & a new dimension was added to effects.

By all means buy cheap speaker cable, but I've found that the basic copper stuff tarnishes and goes green pretty quickly. If you are using bare wire in to the screw terminals rather than soldered plugs then all this green stuff can't be good for conductivity or the signal.

Cables made using Oxygen Free Copper - OFC - are far more resistant to tarnishing.

Regards

I just use stuff that's claimed to be 'pro'. Yeah it's a few quid more than the cheap stuff but as a pro we just buy gear that's designed to work. You never hear anyone say thigs like 'Abbey Road could be a good studio if it had x or y type of cable'. The cable they use just does what it's supposed to and it does it well. Maplins stock it for a few quid a meter.

It's only a waste of money if you buy more expensive cable and then you're not happy with it.

But I'd certainly recommend the QED Silver Anniversary cable for your system.

Re: the 605 ONKYO amp.

A friend of mine recently bought one and has had trouble with it. He gets a strong hiss on one specific channel and the picture quality (he's running Sky HD and a PS3 through it) is a bit suspect. He's on his second unit and both have been the same.

Not saying there's anything inherrantly wrong with them. My friend may have had a couple of Friday afternoon units, or maybe they just need to be better setup. From the little I know, ONKYO seem well respected.
