DVD recorder repair
JB1601
13-03-2008
My Daewoo DVD/VHS recorder started playing up last night - when a disc is in the machine and you try to "open" it just refuses to budge. I've managed to get them out by holding the flap down and poking the tray a few times but this is incredibly tiresome. I've had it for a couple of years so it's out of warranty. If it was a DVD player I'd just buy a new one as they are so cheap, but as I paid about £150 originally (and the prices don't seem to have come down especially) I'd rather not splash out again just yet when it just seems to be one bit of mechanism that's playing up.

Does anyone know of a place in London (ideally north London) that would repair things like a DVD/VHS recorder? Or is the cost likely to be so high I may as well buy a new one? I really don't want to do that but just thought I'd ask! Any thoughts?

In spite of their mechanical simplicity these machines seem to be unreliable. I had two Panasonic machines which failed. Repair would have been expensive and you run this risk of it failing again. New machines now are getting cheaper and you will have a guarantee.

I mean HDD/DVD machines.
Just seem that you are refering to DVD/VHS.

If the VHS part is still working maybe it could be used it with an HDD/DVD machine for DVDing old tapes.

Panasonic have had massive problems with PSU's in their HDD/DVD recorders, apparently they added an HDD to a DVD recorder, but never increased PSU capacity, so they die quite quickly.

As for repairs to DVD recorders, often a repair would be too expensive, but one simple thing to do is look for domed electrolytics in the power supply, it might be as simple as replacing them. Failing that, anything with Daewoo on the front probably isn't worth mending anyway!.
