jimi hendrix the best guitarist ? ? ? ?
i mean was he really cause i for one dont think so at all
yes he was great but not the best i think for the time he blew ppl,s minds but now there are some amazing players a hell of a lot better than jimi (imo) just find it facinating that he,s consistantly ranked the best in polls personally i think rhandy rhodes or frank zappa or joe satriani are considerablly better guitarists right got that off my chest happy again now end of rant! |

'the best' is a subjective thing.....he was definitely great, though, and very innovative. He also wrote a few of my favorite tunes, and his cover of watchtower is great!

Yeah, but he could, like, play it behind his head and set fire to it sort of thing.

It's impossible to define the 'best' guitar player. It's totally subjective.

Technically? No, definintely not.
But in terms of innovation and for the time he was playing? Yes, emphatically yes. I don't think anybody can argue he was the best technical guitar player, and if anybody tries to do that it's best to ignore them as they have probably never heard Hendrix and are only jumping on the bandwagon. But the beauty of Hendrix's playing was never in his technicality - it was his ability to make the guitar speak to the audience and just capture the feel of a song. I challenge anybody to find a more emotive guitar piece than his version of the American National Anthem - written during the Vietnam War, his epic whammy bar dives were meant to be indicative of the bombs falling. Few would think of something like that, and even fewer would be brave enough to make such a dramatic political statement in a guitar solo. A true legend of guitar. |

I rate Jimi the top innovator, but some people might say that Robert Fripp (of King Crimson) is that instead. it is partly about opinions and criteria, but Hendrix was a great showman, he was an innovator and he was technically very good. that ticks the boxes for a lot of people. |
