Did you press 3 to return the call? As it says in the recorded message "There is normally a charge for using this service" if you use the return call facility.

From BT.com

Dialling BT 1471 without using Call Return is free. The Call Return feature of BT 1471 costs a fixed fee of 7.5p. The fee will apply when you press 3 to return your last caller's call. This charge applies whether or not the call is connected.

In fact, you get charged 7½p by BT for pressing 3 even if you use a CPS so the actual return call goes out via the CPS and not BT!

Clever.

We've had 1471 blocked by our Orchid dialler just so the kids aren't tempted to do just this. I have an aversion to paying ANY BT charge. All our phones list the last 20 or 30 numbers calling us.

Unfortunately, I live in the middle of nowhere, and BT is the only service provider available (plus we need a provider who allows 18185, etc).

Not wise to move line rental away from BT. Just use them for line rental and place calls via cheaper providers.
