Just a thought. I gave one to a friend that I made for him in 2006 and he says it only works on some titles on the disc now.
I've read on other websites that burned DVD's may only have a shelf life of 2-5 years before they start to disintegrate, is this true? Have you ever had any discs that have messed up in your experience?

This is probably true. If you store them is a dark cool place and never use them, they will probably last twice as long.

For sure, if you expose them to sunlight they kind of 'melt'. I have evidence of this; you can see with the naked eye that the dye has 'melted' on discs that I have displayed on the wall (like this pic).

Why would you burn a DVD?

I have CDs that I bought 20 years ago that still work perfectly, I would imagine retail DVDs last longer than home recorded ones.

It may depend on the quality of the media, I have a couple of movies from 2002 & they seem to still play fine but then again I haven't bought top quality discs either.

DVD RAM has the best archival longevity apparently.

I have back up digital photos and home movies to DVD RAM but I still check every year and make regular DVD-R copies.

I have had regular burnt disk go bad after only 2-3 years.

I've got some Maxell DVD-R's which are nearly 4 years old now and still play fine.

Are the Maxell DVD-R's good quality compared to other media?

It all depends on what dye they use for the discs.

Quality Taiyo Yuden Dye is what u need.
