Who were the greatest ROCK GROUP or ARTIST ever?
For me it's a very hard question and I'm asking. To be the greatest rock group ever they would have faultless in every way, every album brilliant, brilliant live, and most of all original. Here's a few ,Pink Floyd, Nearly all of there albums were brilliant but not all, brilliant live, and highly original.
Led Zeppelin ,every one of there albums brilliant, brilliant live, original well that's debatable. Frank Zappa, every album brilliant, brilliant live, highly original. Yes, a few duds but the rest brilliant, brilliant live, highly original. You see what I mean I could go on and on. But for me the Greatest Group/ Artist ever has to be Frank Zappa nobody else sounded like before he came on the scene, while he was on the scene and after he died. He was unique and as one of his album titles says, THE BEST BAND YOU NEVER HEARD IN YOUR LIFE. If you've never heard of him check him out you won't be disappointed. At the end of the day it's all about taste, and everybody's is different.

That's such a hard question. I couldn't possibly name the best. I have at least about 5 - 10 that I think are all equally good for one reason or another.
I'll name just one here who I think always get overshadowed or underrated compared to The Beatles or The Stones in the 1960s.....The Kinks. I believe that The Kinks should be held in a higher regard than they are. They are almost always mentioned as a mere footnote. But for me The Kinks are as good as the other two if not better in some cases. |

For me it doesn’t necessarily have to be about technical playing ability, nor about exquisite song-writing skills. Plenty of bands craft complex songs, present neo-theatrical stage shows, sell millions of records as a result – but ultimately leave me feeling cold and unaffected.
I want a band to excite me, to grab my attention with their power and enthusiasm, and to crush me with their energy, no matter how primitive this might be! I like a band that play for NOW, regardless of when their respective NOW existed, rather than a band whose magnum opus arrived a decade after their debut! I’m choosing the MC5. |

I'll agree with the suggestions for the Kinks, I just love them and Ray Davies is a song writing genius (a very overused word IMO), who STILL has it! If you get the opportunity to see him live grab it.
other than them I am a massive Zeppelin fan, Paul Rodgers, Ritchie Blackmore, and for sheer noise, energy and joie de vie how about The Levllers, okay not pure rock but still worthy of a shout. |

Very hard one.
The Who had a series of superb albums at their peak, and were arguably the best live band around. Pink Floyd slowly grew into legends, and from Dark Side onwards were simply brilliant, with huge variations in style. I've just rediscovered the Moody Blues, who were a favourite of mine at the beginning of the 70s. Their first seven albums are all classics, with hardly a duff moment on them. Well worthy of investigation. |

AC/DC, rocking audiences for over 30 years and still going strong, not the most sophisticated or ground breaking of artists but they do exactly what they say on the tin and do it consistently.

As for my favourite, I'd say GNR. They really had everything - an enigmatic (and slightly insane!) frontman in Axl Rose, a biting and almost telepathic double-guitar line between Slash and Izzy Stradlin, and of course they had bags and bags of rock n'roll attitude and image. It's a pity that Axl is souring their reputation with the Chinese Democracy fiasco - but the old band still stands for me as the best of all-time. Appetite For Destruction is timeless - 25 million+ copies sold says a lot about how popular GNR were and still are. |
