Highly rated films you think are bad
I often look up a film on the IMDB to see what other people thought of it before watching them. If something got near or over an 8.0 (say ... 7.5 or over) you'd think it was a safe bet, right? Well on many occasions I have been both gutted and surprised to be in the minority for what I call sucky films, here's a few (I've listed their current ratings)
Signs (qualifies because it had 8.1 when it first came out, still 6.9 now, it should be 2.0) House of sand and fog (7.8) Road to perdition (7.7) Big fish (8.0) V for vendetta (8.2) Good night and good luck (7.8) Assasination of Richard Nixon (7.2) That's my load of crap. The majority of these films were non-action and/or had incredibly boring plots. Please feel free to flame me if you disagree. |

Well I'm a bit too tired to think of any original answers, lol (although I'll be back tommorow) but I'd agree that judging by those initial IMDB scores; Big Fish, Signs and Road to Perdition are all very overated.
Signs was a nice, decent little sci fi film with drama at the heart, but that kind of rating is ridiculous. When you see some of the tripe in IMDB's top 250, and some of the real gems that aren't up there...well, lol. Big Fish isn't that bad, but to me, it represents that type of film that wavers between the classic it might have been and the absolute catasrophe it could have been. It's not a bad film, but it strikes me as being the kind of film a lot of people think they "should" like, and as such, rate it so highly, probably without ever seeing it. Road to Perdition is a tricky one. It's a nice film, slick and well acted, but is it memorable...not in my opinion, and I think that's the most important thing. I remember bits and pieces from various scenes, but there's nothing revolutionary about that film, nothing incredible, or fresh or groundbreaking. Not saying a great film needs to have all those qualities, but once again, I think it falls into that category of films people think they should like, based on the subject matter. |

I've seen all of those films and really enjoyed them all (except Signs which sent me to sleep)!
One film that I cannot understand why everyone raves about is bl**dy Citizen Kane. I cannot fathom why everyone loves it so much. All the critics love it although i suspect a lot of that is because they look intellectual when liking that film. It's also one of those films that people should like and so people say they do without really watching it. I watched it and boy do I wish I hadn't. Quite frankly I find it a bloated, boring mess and a monumet to Orson Welles ginormous ego. It's too long and far too self-important and I by the end of it I couldn't care less what Rosebud is. The characters were all appalling and quite frankly whoever was editing did a bad job. How it won an Oscar for screenplay I'll never know but having say through it I know why Orson Welles career took a dive afterwards! Rant over! |

I think this year's award winners and nominees were highly over-rated:
There will be blood No country for old men The bucket list I am legend I was disappointed in all of them and have seen other movies that entertained/scared/shocked me more than any of this lot I'm not taking away anything that they have been acclaimed for.....but they were still a huge disappointment when I finally got to view them. ![]() I know many will strongly disagree, but I'm probably hard to please.

I can't stand any Coen Brothers films but they are nearly all considered masterpieces.

A film doesn't have to have no action to make it boring for me, but a couple I just didn't rate are
Casablanca - I get to the end and think "so what?" Brokeback Mountain - a brave attempt but I just didn't believe the relationship at all. I agree about the Coens - MOST of their films just leave me cold. |

I've never seen the attraction of 'Citizen Kane', which was described as a "classic masterpiece".
Not fussed on any Woody Allen films either. Other than that, I'm easily pleased

Sleeper is a work of genius and Love and Death isn't far behind but many of his films haven't aged well.
re: the Coens. The first time I watched Blood Simple I thought it was brilliant, but I couldn't see why Barton Fink got such accolades. Watching them both again the other week I though Barton Fink was superb and Blood Simple was a bit of a shambles. Not sure if that proves anything. |

I agree with you about the matrix, I couldn't get into it at all. Jurassic park - I can see why that scored highly, they brought the dinosaurs to life, groundbreaking CGI which still looks good 15 years on.

![]() Citizen Kane leaves me cold and so do Woody Allen films. There are a few other films that I think have been grossly hyped and turn out to be a big disappointment. I found `The Aviator' to be one of the longest, most boring films I ever sat through!! |

I agree with I am Legend.
Signs - I enjoyed this one, probably my second favourite from the man after The Village. House of sand and fog - I didn't enjoy this at all Road to perdition - Worth the watch but nothing memorable Big fish (8.0) - Enjoyed this, not as much as Burton's other work though V for vendetta - Wasn't amazing like a lot said, but still entertaining for me Good night and good luck - This dvd is still in my to watch pile Assasination of Richard Nixon - Is this the one with Sean Penn? it was decent but nothing special. |

I've learned the hard way not to rely on imdb's ratings. I recently rented Costner's "Mr Brookes" because it had an 8 on imdb and it was the biggest pile of giraffe dung I've seen in many a year.

I enjoyed Signs. Think Richard Nixon's on this weekend isn't it? Make that Good Friday on BBC2.

Have you watched it yet? You may enjoy it, there's plenty on the imdb forum who do, I just couldn't get into it, the second half of the film was ludicrous imo.
