I've never had a Surround Sound or Home Cinema System before

I'm just about to purchase a Onkyo TX-SR605 Amplifier and QAcoustics 1010i 5.1 Speaker System

My Systems Components will be as follows .....

SKY Standard Digibox

LG DR4810 Standard DVD Recorder
1 x COAXIAL Audio OUT
1 x COMPONENT Video Out
1 x OPTICAL Audio OUT

Samsung LE37M86BD Television
1 x COMPONENT
1 x OPTICAL Sound Out
1 x AUDIO OUT L/R
1 x COMPOSITE L/R
3 x HDMI

Onkyo TX-SR605
2 x HDMI "IN"
1 x HDMI "OUT"
3 x COMPONENT VIDEO "IN"
2 x DIGITAL COAXIAL "IN"
2 x DIGITAL OPTICAL "IN"

Can any one offer advice on the sequence and type of connections I should use

many thanks

Connect the Sky box to the 605 using S-Video and RCA L/R audio (you'll need a SCART adaptor). Connect the DVD player to the amp using component and optical audio. If you watch DTT via your TV's inbuilt tuner, you'll probably want to connect it to an optical input on the amp.

Then connect the Onkyo to your TV using HDMI.

Cables needed......

1x set of component cables
2x optical cables
2x Scart

Connections.....

AV1 (RGB) Sky > AV1 (RGB) TV

AV2 Sky > AV2 DVDR

Component out DVDR > Component in TV

Optical out TV > Optical in Onkyo 605

Optical out DVDR > Optical in Onkyo 605

This will give you the best PQ on the DVDR.

DD5.1/DTS from the DVDR when available.

DPLIIx from TV/Sky for sport/movies if required.

seeing as you dont have any HD equipment I'm assuming you only want to use the amp to generate sound and not use it as a video driver.

Connect the Sky digibox via the stereo RCA's on the digibox to a suitable stereo input on the amp. This should give pro-logic or prologic II when watching sky. Connect to AV1 in RGB via scart on the tv

Connect the DVD player to the amp via optical cable for 5.1 digital surround. You can connect the dvd player to the VCR scart on the sky box so it plays through AV1 in RGB or use an S-video or AV2 scart connection. If the DVD has an hdmi connection use that 1st.

This way you can choose wether you want to have the sound through the tv or enhanced through the amp. If you use the amp as a video driver you will need to have the amp on all the time while watching tv and, as you dont have any HD equipment, the only benefit of this would be that the amp MAY upscale the dvd player to HD, but I doubt it.

I think you will find that the standard Sky box is not capable of delivering S-Video, AV1 set to RGB is the best connection on offer here.

Using the video up conversion on the 605 does not yield the best results, I have seen first hand a 605 up converting component to HDMI and IMO it was slightly worse than connecting directly to source.

In this case I would just use the amp for the audio duties and connect the other devices directly to the TV.
