Ravel's Bolero has nothing to do with lovers throwing themselves off cliffs:

Quote:
“At the first performance of her ballet production, at the Opéra in November 1928, Ida Rubinstein danced the role of a flamenco dancer who is trying out steps on a table in a bar, surrounded by men whose admiration turns to lustful obsession. Ravel did not entirely approve; his own conception was an outdoor scene in front of a factory whose machinery provides the inflexible rhythm; the factory workers would emerge to dance together, while a story of a bullfighter killed by a jealous rival was played out.”

I wasn't going to watch, but ended up sitting through it. Neither couple did it that well, but I thought Chris was slightly better. Suspect the voting public was influenced by the judges' OTT 6.0's and her little son's facial expressions.

I'd say Chris and Frankie's, because it seemed more faithful to the original.

Suzanne and Matt's just looked like another standard routine.

I loved T&D and totally enjoyed both performances from the finalists. A really great show all round.

Chris's Bolero really surprised me - it was emotional and intimate - but I did prefer Suzanne and Matts - just. I felt their partnership throughout the series was very close and theirs was a very tender interpretation.

Surely, apart from the beginning and the end, it wasn't supposed to be faithful to the original. Wasn't the whole point that it was their interpretation?

Well obviously Jayne & Chris, but of the two contestants both myself and OH (who isn't biased as he hasn't watched much of the series) preferred Chris and Frankies.

Jayne & Chris goes without saying, but of the two finalists I much preferred Suzanne & Matt's Bolero.

To be perfectly honest I was really really enjoying Suzanne and Matt's interpretation until it came to the snake charmer move. That felt as though it had just been lobbed in for the sake of it and broke up the performance for me. This is of course just my opinion though.

I agree - I felt it was just in there for the sake of showing off an unusual move and it didn't fit in with the rest of the performance. So that's one reason I thought Chris' was better.

Chris and Frankies - i didn't really 'feel' Suzanne and Matts interpretation

Thought Chris was good, but considering how great he has been throughout the competition, I thought his Bolero looked rather tentative and he seemed unsure of himself.

Suzanne looked polished and confident; and her end 'fall' was amazing! It might look simple - you know, you take just take both feet off the ice and down you will go - but try doing it!

Definately Suzanne and Matts, Chris's didn't have enough in it for me, sure its a romantic piece but with his talent, they could hvae done a lot more with it!!

It will look interesting if they do it split screen on the DVD. I thought Chris's was tedious without much content. He never really managed to get past the simpler lifts or show if he had superior footwork. Suzanne's had too many little bits probably because she put in the one multi stage lift that was very difficult but took up a lot of time leaving too little time elsewhere and partly because the big lift had a logic of its own. Suzanne matched him for emotion and had more content so for me she edged it. Claire's routine last year was better (even more drama and better blended to the music) and with a couple of the small moves and steps Suzanne put in added would be my idea of perfect (though the physics of their relative weights and their professionals lifting ability probably mean they couldn't do the same routines)

chris and frankie without a doubt. suzanne i think was trying to show off with pointless moves and getting side tracked from the music and what it was about

I think they both did an excellent job but suzanne and matt did a much better job in the flying and favourite part of the show

Although on the night I thought she was better over all I have to say that I was disappointed in Suzanne's Bolero. After seeing how intimate and graceful Chris and Frankie were I was truly expecting something sublime from Suzanne, instead we got a lot of tricks and flicks which did not capture the intensity and passion of the music.

In short Chris and Frankie.

Can I be terribly controversial !!!!!!! I wish they didnt do Bolero myself.....dont get me wrong Torvill & Dean were superb at it in their day it was wonderful....but if they want to have this lets redo a Chris and Jayne routine why not have a change each year and do Barnum (now that would have suited Chris's style) or Mack & Mabel......or give them the same piece of music and get them to make up there own routine.

Suzanne and Matt obviously

Everything Chris ever did was just "Boy showing off in a skate park". There was never any grace and beauty in anything performance.

That in the end was clearly why Suzanne won. Chris could always skate in the first place, so nothing special there, and all he ever did was to add more and more tricks and gimmicks. In reality he acted like the stereotypical young man devoid of any emotion or any understanding that it was important. He wrong imagined that adding yet another trick here or an extra turn more than anyone else, that made him the best. He forgot that this is Ice Dancing, a thing of beauty and emotion. And in the end, being a stereotypical straight male, he couldn't deliver.

Suzanne could!

...and why change everything so that it suits Chris' non-emotional jack the lad attitude. Didn't Chris have enough advantage already?

T & D did a lot of excellent routines, but you never do people's "second best" you always do there No1, their top class, best know, world wide record braking show event.

If Chris was unable (as he was) to do emotion (shame for an actor!) then that was he downfall and why he didn't win.

Ice Dancing requires emotion to perform.
