3 Question - is it possible to disconnect from GPRS?

I have a Nokia 6500 classic on 3. All the time the little [G] icon is at the top of my screen. In my packet data settings I have set it to "when needed" instead of always online.

On my previous networks the [G] icon would only appear when I connect to the internet. Does it have to be on all the time on three or can it be disabled somehow?

nine times out of 10 it will always be on, due to '3's video calls e-mail etc.
