Simon reveals his top5 contestant picks

“There's still a long way to go until a new American Idol is crowned, but that hasn't stopped Simon Cowell from picking his personal top five favorite contestants. Talking to Extra correspondent and girlfriend Terri Seymour, the acid-tongued judge conceded he doesn't remember the hopefuls' names until "the following season," leading him to list his favorites as:

"Brooke [White], David Cook, the Australian guy [Michael Johns], the Irish girl [Carly Smithson], Jason [Castro]. They are all strong."

No, your eyes are not deceiving you -- no David Archuleta. While he didn't choose the 17-year-old Utah native, who infamously forgot the lyrics to "We Can Work It Out" last week, the 48-year-old knows he's not going anywhere anytime soon.

"I think he's still incredibly popular because people remember his previous performances," he says.”

brooke, david c, micheal johns, carly and jason are the ones who have potential artist identity and longevity (sp?)

david a would flop. already shown he cant cope with the pressure

Simon's 'picks' mean nothing, as omitting some of the stronger singers can help them as much as mentioning others can harm them as far as votes. It will all come down to who the producers feel is most marketable.....oh, and does anyone else realise that there is a disclaimer on Idol, basicly stating that, ultimately, the producers have the right to claim what they like and to 'throw away' or dis-count votes for any reason they deem reasonable?
In the end, if votes go too far off their plans, (such as heading for a top three containing no one they had started preparing to promote, wich is unlikely but they cover for the potential of it), they can manipulate everything to suit their plans. Votes count, but they are 'suggestions' more than 'demands'.

If that were true...why did Taylor win instead of Chris D...he didn't make it to the top 3, either.
The votes are what they are.

I said 'all' not 'some...Kat McPhee was in the top 3 plan, as was Daughtry.....
The disclaimer is easy enough to find....google is your friend
As to the rest, I guess you can believe me or not.

im happy with his picks, esp Brooke

I can tell he dosent really like Carly for some reason? He has still yet to say something nice without adding something bad to the comment and she has the second best voice after Syesha.

I think Carly is WAY better than Syesha!

I agree wholeheartedly with Simon's top five, but then I usually agree with him.

Are you having a laugh? Carly could sing Syesha into the next continent.

I agree wholeheartedly with the top 5 he mentioned on Extra.

David A = here today, gone this afternoon

David C = beggar's Daughtry

Carlys voice grates on me, I think she's an inferior version of Barbara Streisand, too nasally and whiny.

Brookes voice is ok but she has an irritating personality.

Syesha has great potential, just needs to sing songs to show off her voice better.

I agree with 4 of what Simon has said which I'm shocked at as most of the time I dont like what Simon likes.

I actually enjoyed Carly for the first time , Brooke was lame( but Blonde so probably will stay in ) she doesn't do anything for me vocally . Ramielle and Kristy were also boring though Kristy at least sounded better than last week . Amanda was just barely average .Out of the guys only Chikeze holds my interest though David Cook reminds me of Chris Daughtry lite

If you read the message boards Carly is definately not popular with American fans. She is definately only there on voice not personality and if she messes up one week like Archuleta did she would be gone. I'm pretty sure she will not win anyway cos they will pick and american to win.

I think it' kinda pooey everyone's always comparing David C to Chris Daughtry, just because they're the same genre. David C had been slogging his guts out for his music career for years before Idol, and sure he's similar to Daughtry, in that respect, just like hundreds of thousands of other rock musicians working for the big break. But they're seperate individuals, with different priorities, and that's reflected in their music, lyrically. (Sidebar: when Daughtry was on the show everyone was comparing him to Bo Bice, completely unjustly, again simply based on their "rocker" aesthetic and the fact that they'd pick similar songs to perform.)

As far as performances on the show go, Daughtry actually quite often overdid it and his voice would crack in the higher register, whereas in my opinion David C's vocals have been more consistent and solid. But without doubt they're both talented artists who shouldn't be so closely contrasted because they entered the mainstream arena via the same platform.

another interesting article / interview

Quote:
“The Dish Rag talked with "American Idol" judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson at the Details magazine Mavericks party at a private Beverly Hills estate last night.

Here's what the bantering boys had to say about the show, the songs, who will win ...

DR: You've both mentioned that you think a guy is going to win this season. Why?

Randy: I think the boys are stronger and more interesting than the girls this year.

Simon: Yeah, I agree.

Randy: It's different every year. It just depends what comes out

DR: What are the surprises that you have in store?

Randy: Ryan’s gonna streak!

Simon: It can all change at the end. Don’t rule out this girl Brooke [White].

Randy: Yeah. she’s very strong. Very consistent.

DR: What do you genuinely love about Ryan? And what gets under your skin?

Simon: Ego.

Randy: Yeah, ego.

Simon: Selfishness. Ego

Randy: Just ego.

DR: That Aussie, Michael Johns — what are his chances of winning?

Simon: Out of 100? Two. Because he’s not choosing the right songs and I’ve told him that.

Randy: He still hasn’t sung the right song on the show yet.

DR: So what are your picks, your favorites?

Simon: Top three: David Archuleta. Jason Castro. Brooke or Ramiele [Malubay].

DR: What is it about each one of them that makes them stand out?

Simon: Popularity.

Randy: Popularity and they also rule in consistency. The talent is always there.

Simon: But the best singer is the Irish girl.

Randy: Yeah, Carly [Smithson] is the best singer

Simon: But she’s not the most popular .”
