I have just got my BT bill and I'm being charged £2.33 for Caller ID and Answer 1571 - I was under the impression that these services were free under the BT Privacy add on?

I called BT and they advised me that unless I make a chargable call within 30 days these will be charged; but I have the total broadband package where all my calls route over my broadband connection and calls to 01 / 02 number are free.

We have a house rule that mobiles should not be called from the landline. So based on this I'm never going to make a chargeable call.

Does anyone have the same problem or advise? BT's advice is to call a special number from my "normal" line which costs £3.00 to connect too.

That is correct, it was one of the changes introduced in the footnotes of the leaflet you should have received with your last bill (but if you are paper free guess you wouldn't have received it...). Just remember to make a few short calls each month - eg to the speaking clock - and it will save you the charge.

I am told (a BT employee on the MSE forums) that inclusive calls also count now.

So, if you've remained on BT Together Option 1 (a.k.a. the Unlimited Weekend Plan), weekend calls to UK 01/02/03 numbers of less than an hour, although free, count towards free 1571 and Caller Display.

Similarly, if you've upgraded to BT Together Option 2 (a.k.a. the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan), evening and weekend calls to UK 01/02/03 numbers of less than an hour, although free, count towards free 1571 and Caller Display.

This is excellent news. It means I will no longer have to pay BT any money whatsoever in call charges. Just prefix 2calls with 1280 each month instead of having all my free evening and weekend calls via Virgin.

Is this the first time BT have done something of benefit to a customer?

The charges have been in for quite some time.

I also found these charges on my latest bill. I was straight onto BT customer services and they have agreed to credit this amount on my next bill. If (like me) you are on paperless billing you would not have known about the introduction of these charges and should seek credit.
