Is it true that Akai have gone out of business?
We have a 2 year old 30" LCD model LM-H30CJSA which has gone dead, no power. Local repair shop says the "power supply unit" is showing no low voltage outputs to the TV although AC power is supplied. Says he cannot locate a new one, have Googled without luck, anyone any ideas on where we could get one from.

To be honest, I was under the impression that Akai bit the dust quite some time ago. Is there a chance that the brand name has been used by a company selling generic kit (like Vestel stuff maybe?)

Look out for Nigel Goodwin, he is incredibly knowledgeable with this stuff, and will be able to tell you for sure

Afraid not, I was under the impression that Akai had vanished years ago, like you say, probably someone is badging Vestels (or something simlar) with the Akai name?.

Thats disturbing that Akai vanished years ago, we actually bought the TV from Makro in June 2005 (so was 2.75 years ago) was a promo at the time and cost £800 with the VAT which was a good deal at that time. We have since bought a philips 42" LCD (again from Makro - gulp) which cost less than the Akai thingy.
Just hoped to source a part and use in the spare bedroom with the PC.
Looks like it's time for the tip, thanks guys anyway.

Might be worth getting a second opinion from another repair shop ?

If, as seems likely, it's a rebadged set then there are only a limited number of 'OEM' producers - Vestel, BEKO and Orion being the most common. though I'm sure there must be others, then I'd have thought it would be fairly easy for them to work out from which this originated and what the alternative parts are.

Does your local repair shop have the relevant contacts for 'unbranded' items ? or do they specialise in 'branded' repairs usually ?

Indeed they did. They went bankrupt in 2004. They are now owned by Grande Holdings Limited, a Hong Kong based outfit that owns Sansui and a few other brands. They're also a big OEM supplier with production in China (surprise surprise), so I guess that's where they get most of their products.

Don't know not used them before, but they are a long established TV shop in the town and would think they are used to branded only, I will collect it from them tomorrow and try someone else like you suggest.
Thanks - Jim
