HD TV for VM
I'm sure this question has been hammered many times, but here goes.
After 8 years my Loewe CRT has gone home. I need to replace it and have obviously read many posts and failed to come to a conclusion. My dilemma is that I cannot see VM broadcasting a substantial enough content of HD to warrant a top notch HD TV (that is the latest full Hd) Considering SD programmes are generally viewed better on a Plasma than a LCD, would I be better off getting a Panasonic Plasma without full HD capabilities or what. Do you guys feel that VM will eventually get Sky content of HD, will terrestrial HD come soon. Please help as I have just got home from holiday to see my beloved Loewe having died while away. The picture quality was sublime and was much better than SD programmes on LCD HD's that I have seen. What a weekend I have in store with all those lovely footy games on a soppy portable. Advice please. |

I suspect any capacity issues will be resolved once the analogue services are going although VM are looking at the 50meg broadband as a source for HD under the current talks with VOOM.
Only time will tell it ITVHD and CH4HD turn up on VM when they finally arrive as FTA channels on satellite, if they don't then you could look at a Freesat system (if you don't want to pay SKY) and add some HD that way. Given the stance of VM in terms of publicly stating linear HD is not the answer and VOD is I can not see how they can back track or SKY for that matter provide their HD content without giving VM a very good all round service when compared to SKY HD. I am not willing to put any money on a nation wide HD service on DTT, too many infrastructure, political and economic issues surrounding it. If you have no interest in Blu-ray or going to SKY then perhaps a 1366*768 panel is the more cost effective solution and of course since you already own Loewe than cost isn't the primary concern

Yes that is pretty much it. I am happy staying with VM although the HD content is an issue. But as a whole the package is good.
The need for a new TV is my primary concern and the most important thing is getting a good SD picture as good as I had with the Loewe but obviously with a slim flat screen. The Loewe was a 32" and the missus would like a bigger one this time - maybe 37 /40". The resolution you quote is obviously true 16 / 9 as opposed to 1068 /764 - is that an issue? What screen size would accomodate that resolution? What model plasma within the Panasonics would you recommend £800 /1000 ish. Thanks for the reply. There was a time when I was into all this HT stuff - now I know nothing. |

SD performance for HD flat panels is the bug bear of the technology
![]() I would be amazed if the Loewe LCD's were not capable of doing a good job but you do pay a premium and as always a less high brow band could match the performance at a much lower price point. In terms of LCD and Plasma then all the big boys have good performing panels within your price range, as to recommending one then I can not. I'm not in the market so don't really follow the technology at this time but the AVForums have a very healthy forum which covers display technology for both new and old hands at the game, worth a read. HDTV Test is also a good read. The different resolutions work due to the pixel shape changing from square to oblong so fed a 16:9 source everything stays at the correct ratio. These days the 1024*1024 or 1024*768 panels are becoming scarce as the bar has raised to the point where 1920*1080 is becoming the standard. Bottom line is the under certain circumstances the pixel count can be secondary to the overall performance of a HD panel especially for SD content. |
