I purchased an lcd tv from comet back in december 2005. I paid £1200 for it so i took out their extended warrenty just to be safe.
well the other night i spotted that the colour down the left hand margin was of a different shade to the main screen. The image behind is still clear but just of a different shade.

Its not like the old days when you put your speakers next to the TV and the screen went green this is some thing different.
This is the same from any image source, SkyHD, DVD and internal tuner.
So I've called up and got a service engineer coming out next friday.
What I want to know is what they are like regarding the service they offer, repairs, replacement etc.

Also if i get offered a replacement would it be of the same price range as I originally paid of of a similar spec?

Just having paid over £1000 I don't really want to be fobbed off with a set that costs less than half what I paid.

The TV is question is a Philips 32PF7520D/10

As a total guess, I would suggest it 'may' be dust inside the LCD panel - this would require the LCD changing, and would probably write the set off. But that's only one possibility, based on your description.

If they replace the set, they would probably replace it with one of a similar specification, NOT of a similar cost.

On my Certificate of insurance it says the following

So what does this really mean and what would I expect to get if the product is written off?

Providing the cover is from Comet (not Domestic and General which you'd have taken out after the first 12 months) you'll get a credit note to the price paid for the TV.

Thanks iDan, yes the insurance was taken out at the time of purchase with Comet. The Extended Warranty Agreement has Comet branded on the top although the certificate says insured by AIG Europe (UK) Limited.

The other thing I am worried about it the engineer saying the fault isn't severe enough for any action to be taken. Although I was assured at the time I purchased the warranty that they had a 1 pixel policy rather than Philips 7 pixel policy. Then the fault getting worse and being out of warranty.

OK the guy turned up and spent 10 mins looking at the TV.
Said to my wife the panels had gone and would need replacing.
To my suprise he then left saying someone would call to arrange collection.

Anyway will they just replace the LCD Panels or replace the set now?
Also find it odd that they didn't take it away then and there, surely it would cut down on costs?

We had similar experience with a fridge.
an engineer come out, said someone would be in touch.
We got a cheque a few days later tottaling the amount we paid for it, over a year ago.

TV is set to be picked up friday now.
Just hope as mentioned earlier the TV is write off as there seems to be another problem developed with HD-A signals. With SkyHD and Xbox 360 via component-DVI i get picture drop outs. Its normally with a major sceen change of advert and with the Xbox is normally from gameplay to a script sceen.

Was mentioned to the engineer at the time, also showed him a recording but put it down to the advert. Guess what it was a COMET advert!!!!

Good luck with it. Personally I have had too many bad experiences with Comet and their lousy after sales service so I do not buy from them under ANY circumstances any more.

Well the TV came back last week, scratched to bits, chunk missing from the remote.
Not happy.
Put it back on the bracket and turned it on. TV came on and I tried to turn down volume from TV. Seems they forgot to connect the pcbs up! Also the new pamels fitted are showing discolouration as well as one of the original fault not even being looked at.

Anyway done some more diagnostics myself and found that any dark scene followed by a white scene results in a loss of picture.
Best example has been the play.com advert for Halloween or a night scene with a gun shot flash.
The loss of picture is complete loss of signal resulting the picture needing to resync the picture.
Loan tv turned up today and replicated the fault which didn't affect the picture.

So anyone know what this problem could be?

Not happy with the state the set was returned in but comet team wont say anything until the set is looked at again. Despite the fact when an engineer came out this week he recommended the tv be replaced.I was told this by a customer service center manager who read my file!

Sounds like the usual appalling Comet service. I'm with Gadget Guy with regards to Comet- I wouldn't go within sniffing distance of one of their stores.
I hope you get a result out of them- the only way seems to be to keep on and on and on at them. Good luck.
