In the libretto it refers to Nancy as being aged around 23. Obviously as some of you have said, that would be equivalent to late twenties/thirties now, hence, I guess, why the playing age was so broad. They were looking for somebody with a playing age between 17 and 35. I was surprised that so many from the bottom end of this scale went through but it'll be interesting to see what the comments are like.

And if you check the Bookies, Jodie is second from top at 6/1, with only the total professional, I've done this before, friends of DVO - Franceseca above her.

![]() I though we were trying to find someone to 'act' the role? I wasn't suggesting we find a Nancy with an abusive husband, just someone nearish the orginal age-range! |

But that is exactly the point 17 is the original age, as the book was written before any of the musicals or films.

My guess is that although they want it to be played as the original we have to move with the times and take into account changes that have occured and that to find a Nancy at 17 that has been working most of her life or who can act that way without the experience is a very tall order! Without doubt and worldy, older more experienced girl will be far better for the part and make it more believable. |

True Nancy was 17 in the original Dickens novel but that was when life expectancy was very short. Most died at 40 years old. By todays life spans Nancy would be in her 30's !
If its set in the late 1800's then Nancys age will be 17 surely? |

Heating invented by the Romans... next!
Gaslight had been around for quit a while plus candlelight .... next You are only three metres away from a rat in London at any one time, and if your in a Lloyd Webber theatre........ Lighting and heating would be by naked flame! Health and Safety wouldnt allow the play to go on! Things have to change with the times! |

My favourite so far is Jessie - I was very glad when she got through.
I wonder if my opinion will change over the weeks!

My point was nothing to do with Olivers background comment, I was refering to your point about finding a Nancy near the original age and 17 is the original age.
I was the one saying that we should stick to the Dickens age, although I do think MrSpeilberg has made some interesting points regarding the opposite. |

Yes they want the stage and set to be just as it is described in the book, not the Auditorium, Its not real mate, its a story and the audience are WATCHING the story, and watching the actors exeriences, bloody hell you dont go and see Sweeny Todd and expect to get your throat cut do ya???? |

You have not heard Sarah sing, I dont know if she is Nancy, but that is more of a physical thing, her voice is definitely strong enough as is her acting abilty, she is very good, you have yet to see her do her thing.
As I said she just reminded me of NancyNancy, a sort of sweet blonde wavy haired girl ![]() Maybe I should stick with my first impression of her then (along with Jessie and the wild Jodie). |

The actors and actresses need to act and to act in a believable way. As you have previosuly said you would think mid twenties would be a good age! So we are somewhat agreeing in a roundabout way that 17 is way too young for an actress in 2008 to play the part of Nancy! |

Sorry I think we've both gotten confused. You quoted my response to someone talking about the backgrounds of the olivers, hence my response!

I was just going by the auditions which don't really show their capability as she wasn't featured as much on the shows as the likes of Jodie and Jessie.
