hi

I have recently uprgaded to a w910i which should be able to make video calls. but it seems that my phone has not got 3G for some reason.

sometimes it says E at the top (for edge i think)
and sometimes it says G ( which i think is for GPRS)

does anyone know how to activate 3G on my phone. I have found one setting but it says 3G is active? any ideas anyone?

(sorry if its a dumb question but ive only ever had normal non 3G phones before)

Your not in a 3G area !

On T-mobile especially, the 3G coverage is carp.

I think I was on 3G when I put my simcard in a phone a borrowed off my dad last month tho? (i maybe wrong)

the coverage map says I should be able to get video calls ( although I do realise these are just a guide, and sometimes wrong)

is there such a thing as a 3G sim card?

thanks for replying

I think there are different sims for 3G but not sure.

Try this site http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/

In fact o2 has the worst 3g coverage and was recently got into trouble with ofcom for its poor 3g coverage.

Coverage is much and such with the other networks though.

Also yes you do need a 3g sim card to use 3g.

O2 should send you one for nothing or a small charge.

Most networks are giving out 3g sims as standard nowadays (certainly the case with t-mob).

the predictor says Im in the area for "High - Video Calls / News"
but there isnt any near me for "HSDPA O2 coverage"

but when I try to make a video call it fails instantly.

and I have still got the same sim card ive had since about 2004 so its probably not a 3G sim scad. do I need to request a new one?

Probably. They're still issuing 2G SIMS to this day (even when my brother specifically asked for a 3G Sim. All Fixed Now).

cheers. it looks like another call to O2 then. you would think that if they were going to send you a 3G phone then they would realise you needed a 3G sim.

is it worth the call, I cant see myself ever actually making video calls?

When I upgraded my o2 phone to a 3G phone they sent the new sim along with it, which I had to call to activate.

When I upgraded to a 3g phone, I brought with me my 2003 sim card, and that didn't let the phone use the 3G network (which was def in my area). A call to o2 which said "my phone won't find 3g, and my sim card is quite old" resulted in them posting out a new one, which was 3g enabled.

The 3g signal isn't everywhere though, as previously posted. Although there *are* two types of 3g coverage. There's "Standard" 3g, or HSDPA, the latter of the two promising increased speed, however both are perfectly fine to carry video calls.

If you don't use the mobile internet much, or send many picture messages, OR make video calls, you might as well not worry; it's only these things which 3g will speed up by much; certainly browsing the internet. If you just call, text, and send the odd picture messages, perhaps popping on the 'net occasionally for the odd thing, you might as well just ignore the 3g thing and stick to GSM only; you can enjoy longer battery life without using 3G, that's for sure!

Email O2 and ask them to transfer your account to a 3G sim which they will quite happily do. They send you a 3G sim and then once that comes, you give them the sim serial number of the existing and the new sim along with both phone numbers. They then set a date for the transfer and on this day you will see a loss of service for a couple of hours tops. Then its all done

On the back of your sim card there is a sim serial number - it begins 894411 at the end of the numbers it will either say 2GD2+ or 3GD2+

If it says 3G you have a 3G sim card, if not then you dont. If you dont you can either call O2 and have them send you a replacement sim card or you can go into an O2 store and get one yourself.

Normally all upgrade handsets will come with a NEW sim in the box, so I would double check your box contents. If you have a new sim in there all you need to do is call O2 with the sim serial and they will do a sim swap for you.

Same thing happened to me - you need a new USIM from o2. Phone customer services - they will post one to you - when it arrives keep your old SIM in the phone & call customer services with the serial no of the new SIM on the card. Then swap the sims over and hey presto, 3G works !!

hi dxrulz. i got my 3G sim card today. and I only ordered it last night!

I rang up and all I had to give was the number on the new sim card.

It was active almost instantly. I think im in a fringe area for 3G - sometimes the little 3G icon comes up on the screen, but its not there for very long.

by the way - does anyone know the costs involved for video calls on 02. I think they used to come out of your inclusive minutes. someone said they were 50p a minute.

the website says same price as standard calls? do does that mean it comes out of your incluse calls or what?!?!

I believe video calls are charged at the same rate as standard calls; so yes it'll count down the same inclusive minutes as you would use to make voice calls, or if you've run out of those, it'd be charged as if it were a voice call.

At least that's how they charge me for them; you might like to phone them and make sure!

I think all video calls are now charged at your standard minute rate (20p per minute) and do not come from your inclusive allowance.
