I couldn't find the alternate thread on this Steve. *shrugs*

Why BB allowed books, the ultimate conversation killer, to be allowed in is a bit surprising. This years lot have taken to the book more so than last years as I recall - definate avoidance stuff going on. As they are all cagey and are averse to being conforntational its no surprise that they timidly reach for a tome when the pychological pressure is on.

Next year, ban books - that'll have the middle classes up in arms.

They've only asked for the ex housemates books to be returned not all the books. So it's gos and tanias books that had to be returned to the diary room.

Books should not be allowed, big mistake.
Thought they were banned in previous BB's am I correct ?

There's a related thread Here but it never really got going. BB specifically requested that the HM's return books, toiletries and any other items that ex HM's had left behind without BB's permission.

Stop being a plebian there is nothing middle class about being well read. As for BB last year they were banned, the year before they were taken away when Paul & Helen used them to communicate. Either way having them sit around all day won't make them be interesting - ever had a queit day at work there is only so much you can talk about in a day.

My comment was tongue in cheek, and I'm assuming your "plebian" comment is also

If C4 want to engender a pressure cooker environment where conflict is more likely (see past BBs), books are a definate no-no as its all too easy to escape into another world away from any inner and outter conflict.

I agree that a lack of books does not make someone automatically interesting, but it does mean a lack of escape when things are "awkward" and its very often in these tense and "no-where to hide" situations that things come to a head.

Going by the personality types this year C4 have decided on mostly non-confrontational types, so allowing them books just adds to a desire to diffuse any arguments or interpersonal flaring - maybe they thought this would attract more timid viewers who were put off by last years excesses and keep all those who are already fans of the show. Lisa's addition to the house was a desperate admission of a mistake, that the house needed someone to stir it up.

I don't think the hms should be allowed to take their own choice of book into the house.

A 'Library' of 12 books should be provided for them. Any suggestions?

The house at pooh corner AA Milne
Charlottes web EB White
Chocky J. Wyndham
Animal farm G. Orwell
The carpet people T. Pratchett

Nothing too taxing. In fact completely the opposite of the kind of books taken in this year. Childrens books are not overly absorbing or time consuming. There's nothing controvercial about them. If BB is to deprive housemates of anything they would normally have at their disposal then childrens books would seem to be the best option next to no books at all.

Why did it take them almost 3 weeks to figure out there were books belonging to ex HMs in there?! They must have some really stupid people working behind the scenes.

Any book by Lyall Watson. My own recommendation would be Dark Nature.

BB should give them books to read, then they should be set the Task of discussing the book.

Perhaps HM's are given books to read, then must give a speech reviewing the book and giving their insight into it.

That would be an interesting task for each HM.

True, and at least they'd whip through them quickly. But it'd sure back up the whole "dumning down TV" criticisms levelled at BB! Out of interest, if you all could only bring one book into the BB house, which would it be?

P.S Animal Farm may have talking animals in it but I can't imagine it's a children's book, is it? Unless I was just a particulary dumb child!

I remember having to read Animal Farm when I 13 or 14 at school. Only when I read it in my radical 20s did I see what Orwell was trying to communicate about a corrupt Stalinist Russia.

As an aside, this was actually a question on the second round application form this year.
