My mother loves to pour treacle over her chips

Me, I prefer chilli, mayo or bbq sauce.

depends on the quality of the chips. Usually I have battered sausage and chips, so it's got to be brown with the sausage, then red with the chips afterwards.

If they are fine chips and very crisp, then garlic mayo. It's years since I had curry sauce, but a portion of mushy peas helps as well.

Does anyone remember getting chips and a bag of scraps (free with the chips, or 1d without)

We always used to ask for scraps. They were lovely as all the chippys back then used beef dripping. Nothing better than a bag of chips walking home on a cold night. If you could afford fish to go with them you were in heaven! I'm originally from Grimsby so I know my fish and chips and whenever I go back the chippy is my first port of call, they are the best in the world.

Nah, it's the bits off batter that come off the fish when it's frying. Some people call them batter bits.

Scraps are the bits of batter and fish that have fell off the main fish whilst under the hotlight.

Rather than waste these would be sold mainly to kids for a small charge on top of your chips, sometimes free if the chippy bloke was feeling generous.

We used to call them fish bits.

When battered fish was first sold nobody ate the batter, it was just there to protect the fish while it was being cooked. So you bought the fish and threw away the batter.

We still get scraps up here and they are always free

There is really a North/South divide and I think it starts just outside Teesside
I was in Darlington and was at a chippy and asked for a half lot and she just had a gormless look on her face.

A half lot is a small fish with chips

Agreed on the free scraps. Who on earth would pay for them?

My personal tastes are either the chips with salt ONLY, with salt and curry sauce, fries (like the ones you get from KFC, BK et al) I like with mayo and the ones you get from dodgy kebab shops should have the garlic sauce.

Of course the latter goes with a nice half bolognese parmo on a night -- with donner meat mind, no salad, and chips, all doused in garlic sauce. All for a fiver from our local place, nice. Can feed two on that and you're still both stuffed

I've wondered into many a chip shop by me and asked for some batters on my chips - yummy.

My mother in her yoof days informed me that she used to get a bag of batters for her tea as a kid at least once a week!

Ohh scraps!

They used to be the favourite bit of the meal as a kid!

And, yes, this was in the south

Had this conversation with someone recently and it seems you can no longer get them

Seems strange as they are a natural by product of battered food

Kind of the same here.
I like fries with just salt.
I like chip shop chips with salt & vinegar
I like chinese chips with soy, don't know why, maybe just the smell in the take-away
Chinese take-aways do great chips

Because take-away chips are usually frozen I don't mind having them with garlic sauce or cheese.

The take-aways usually have the pre-bought cheese that is a mix of cheddar & mozzarella (and probably some of that cheese substitute crap). but it works well

mmmm chips! I love chips with everything....cheesy chips, chips & brown sauce, chips with cheese AND brown sauce, chips with gravy, chips with sweet chilli sauce. And I could easily put chips with any meal, chips & pasta, chips and sunday roast.
Ooh and scraps, I haven't had them for about 15 years, but loved them....quite fancy some now!
I'm northern by the way, maybe that explains my chip addiction?
