Sorry if this question has been asked many times before but I'm totally confused with all the stuff I have been reading.

Rightly or wrongly I want an iPhone but dont want the iPhone tariff as I have a better package already.

Am I right in thinking that I can:
1) go into an apple shop or a CarPhone Warehouse
2) buy a 16GB iphone
3) not register it via itunes
4)'jailbreak' it so that I can use it with my normal o2 sim?
5) Most importantly not be tied into a contract!?

Please please please can someone clear this up for me! Im going crazy with this lol

Cheers!

all correct i think. not sure if it still works with any o2 sim just with jailbreaking (mine did bit it's on an earlier firmware version) or whether you need to unlock aswelll, but it shouldn't matter either way as unlocking is possible.

thanks for your reply...so all i need to do is buy it then get on the internet to find out how to jailbreak and unlock?

Anyone know how to do it?

Im confused why if it is this easy that people are paying nearly £400 for a 16GB iphone on ebay when you can just got and buy one from the shop for £320... or am I missing something?

i think most people are using ziphone to jailbreak and unlock. you should be able to find it fairly easily via a search. i haven't used it so i can't vouch for it.

it isn't always easy. i don't know what ziphone does but when i first just jailbreaked my phone (to use o2 pay and go sim) it took me a while and i had to get into the iphone's internal files and change preference lists for internet access. also after unlocking it i changed some files so that it doesn't say "call forwarding" everytime i made a call from a non o2 sim and added EDGE editing so that i could put in APN details for other operators. and i also had to add a little program to stop it crashing when used in other countries with local sims.

so sometimes there is more to it to get a perfectly working iphone in all countries with all sims.

from what i've heard ziphone is very easy to use. whether it deals with EDGE editing, eliminating the call forwarding messages and the crashes when using sims from countries where iphone is not sold, i don't know. but it should get you jailbroken and activated very quickly which is the main thing you want.

if you have any problems try modmyiphone and hackint0sh for help.

I work for O2 and would advise you NOT to do this as it will invalidate the warrenty, and secondly you will NOT be able to use all of the IPhone features.

yes, i should have pointed that out earlier. you will invalidate your warranty. but the only feature you won't be able to access is visual voicemail.

i spend £10 a month on mine (i don't need many mind and AMA) and when i go abroad i can use a local sim saving me a fortune. if it develops a fault i'll buy a new one and still be saving money over the o2 iphone tariff.

Yes, you can use ZiPhone to jailbreak/unlock any iPhone. Go ahead and do it, it's great. I have one, on O2 PAYG, and have the O2Web bolt on.

It works fine.

It will invalidate the warranty if they TELL you and hand it in unlocked, ZiPhone has a very simply button you can click called "Restore" which undoes everything it did to the phone and puts it back to factory settings, there is no way o2 or Apple will know then, so it does NOT invalidate your warranty if you put restore it before handing it back if u need to.

Plus the only feature you miss is the visual voicemail, which is nice but not really missed by anyone I know with an unlocked iPhone.

Yeah its literally two clicks of a mouse and it does it all for you:

Just click the box you want on the left side and it does it! Easy

An iPhone has to be in an 'active' state before it can be repaired by apple/O2/carphone warehouse. Therefore, if you use Ziphone to restore the handset will return to its 'inactive' state and wont be able to go in for repair.

Cheers for all your replies Guys and Gals!

I think I will just go for it. Seems pretty easy and fingers crossed I wont need the warrenty... and I will just get it insured anyway so that should cover problems like that...

ONE LAST QUESTION! I was told by someone that if you do not register it (i.e. unlock it) then you will not be able to upgrade to the newer version of the softare via itunes when they are released... is this the true?

Thanks again! Im getting excited now lol

I have an iphone and tried the unlocking/jailbreaking procedure via ziphone to satisfy my own curiosity. It brought several problems including no EDGE and I also had to fix YouTube (which even then was running a lot slower than normal. Also, Visual Voicemail doesnt work.

I decided that the iphone experience is a lot better without unlocking and jailbreaking. It really isnt worth the hassle.

That's just another outdated view, it was true in the early days of the iphone, but now you can update it, you just have to unlock it again after you're done it, just takes 2 mins in ziphone.

Completely false, if you restore it in ziphone it just returns the phone to how it would be out of the box, yeah it will be inactive, and show the "Connect to itunes to activate screen", but it would be like that before you registered it with o2. There is no where in the user agreement that says the phone has to be in use to be repaired.

For example if you bought one a few months ago and had a few of them, and never got round to activating it (ie to use it) but you took it out the box and it wasn't working, they wouldn't turn around and say "oh no, you never used the phone so we're not repairing it", that's actually against consumer law.

Plus if you have the o2 sim (but choose to use a different one) you can restore it, pop ur o2 sim in an activate it again.

It looks the same to o2 and apple as a brand new iphone out of the box that just hasn't been activated through itunes, they still repair them.

I think you'll run into the same problem with and insurance that you would with the warranty.

There'll be something in the terms & conditions of the insurance that'll state if you use the device contrary to the manufacturers recommendations (which Jailbreaking, Unlocking, Hacking clearly is) then they wont pay up.

As I have said, restore it with ziphone or itunes and there will be no traces of the jailbreak/unlocking, so it won't be clear to them.
Your knowledge is a year old, based on what you had heard from hardware unlocks.

It's very easy to just resotre the phone to factory settings these days. i have had two friends who have done this and got the phones fixed just fine.

I was thinking of changing to o2 PAYG with the web bolt on, does this just let you browse the internet or will it let you send and recieve emails and use the weather/youtube/stocks and itunes functionality while out and about?

Does the web bolt on work anywhere that you get an O2 mobile signal? I'm stuck to using it only at home with my wifi at the moment.
