This is probably one of the more moronic questions you get asked on here, but hey, it is Friday after all.

Ever since I lost my job due to breaking my wrist (long story, don't ask!), I've found I've been staying up later and later. Tonight, I've decided to go for it and see the sunrise in before going to kip.

So, my question, any idea what time it gets light nowadays?

It gets light at about 5.30am here, but it depends what part of the country you're in.

The BBC weather forecast for your town has the sunrise and sunset times on it

So it does. I looked there before, must have missed it.

Cheers

Sunrise for Friday is 05:43, so it will start to get light at around 05:10.

Well it depends where you live. If "Newbiggin" is accurate then this map suggests around 5.48 at Newcastle.

Be warned that in my experience of sunrise/sunset, unless you happen to be somewhere really cool like an island off Finland, it's rarely very exciting. 05:48 is the time at which the sun should start to be visible on the horizon, but in reality it'll get light 30-60 minutes before that as light gets reflected around the earth. Similarly with sunset times, it's always a gradual process, rarely like you'd imagine with last rays of sunshine visible in the sky and then "poof", instant darkness. If you're lucky you might see some nice looking clouds being lit from below, but generally sunrise and sunset are really disappointing.

I don't really want to see sunrise, more just be up when it get's light.

It used to be a regular occurance for me when I was in my late teens, now just not done it for a while.

I do live on the coast, so I may take a walk down to the beach at about half 4, five-ish if I am still up.

It's 2am now, 4 hours to go.

1) Bottle of coke - caffeine!
2) very loud metal music on computer speakers (hey, it's my house, it's not too loud to wake the neighbours though)
3) Sky television and a few DVD's if I get bored of the internet
4) not doing anything remotely interesting tomorrow.

Can I pull off an all nighter for the first time since I was 22? Let's find out!

How's it going?

If I was there I'd go for a beach stroll too - lucky you being by the sea!

Dozens of webmongs are devastated at your failure to complete your mission.

Will you be trying again?

Get some Red Bull in if you do.

It was light when my OH went to work just before 6am yesterday...and he said the sunrise shone in the front door of his work while they were getting ready to open, so about 6.15ish probably. Hope you give it another go tonight OP

I'll be trying again sometime in the near future. I've got stuff to do tomorrow so I need an early night tonight, and then next week the clocks go back. I will give it another go though.

I know what went wrong. I put Sky on at half past three and it was Dale Winton's Supermarket Sweep. It was all downhill from there.

What's the earliest it gets light over the summer? It's about 4-ish isn't it?

That said, there's not much challenge in that. I could try and do it over the winter.

It's not really about watching the sunrise. I just want to relive my student days and pull an all nighter.

Of course, that would be a bit of a waste of time unless you live on the East coast!
