O2 don't support delivery reports?

I've just taken out a contract for a new O2 mobile on their £15/month with unlimited texts offer, with a Nokia 6300.

Everything going well, have been using it for a couple of days. But I notice am not getting delivery reports on SMS messages, even though I have turned the option on. Every text I send says "waiting for delivery", even though I know they have been received.

Spoke to O2 about it and they said that their network does not support that feature! I find that very hard to believe, and my friend who bought a Motorola U9 from them on the same contract is getting a little icon at the side of her sent messages which indicates delivered.

I cannot use a mobile without delivery reports, so can anyone confirm the truth on this - before I start packaging it up and sending it back to them?

Hi,

I'm on 02, if you put *0# before your message or save it as a template then you will get delivery reports.

You'll get a report like this

Message 2404825056 to 447872101105, was delivered at 11:35 on 28/03/08. Text:

Hope that helps,

Andy

It is true. Orange do a similar deal, but you get 100 x net minutes as well for £15. Although I believe they charge you a penny a time on delivery reports. Why cant you use a mobile without delivery reports???

I heard its something to do with the systems O2 use. Delivery Reports are either not switched on or the systems need upgrading before it can be switched on. I think its something along those lines. Maybe someone who works at O2 (i know there are some on this forum) can explain better?

Have tried that, and it works, but good grief what a clunky palava to go through for every SMS!! And the report that comes back just sits in the Inbox, there is nothing in the sent items folder to indicate the message has been delivered.

Think I'll return it and go back to Orange. On theirs I get a little grey "i" at the side of the message in sent items, which changes to green once it has been delivered.

I can't use a mobile without delivery reports because I want the knowledge that messages have been delivered. There are many occasions when there is a delay in reply because the other person is in a bad signal area or hasn't charged their phone up or something, and I like to know when it's been delivered.

I was/am on Orange believe it or not, but wanted to change to O2 because my best friend is doing so to get the £7.50 a month broadband offer.

I hope they can. I have to say, my first experience of O2 customer services was not great, along the lines of "we don't support that service. If you don't like it, you have 14 days to send it back". No offer of an explanation as to why they don't support or if there are any plans to.

I will give it a few days and see if I can get on with inserting a template before every text message. I really don't want to send it back because everything else is fine, and also I had to pay them a £100 3-month bond because I had the temerity to move house in the last 3 years, so it could get very messy if I cancel now...

So can someone just clarify..on payg..which networks do and which dont have delivery reports. Deliverty reports are essential when the person youre trying to reach is elderly/infirm/ill. That way if your text is delivered and you dont get a reply you know you might need to worry!

From the Googling I've now done, it seems they all support it except O2. Is that correct? Not sure about PAYG, I'm on contract. But I imagine that if the network supports it then it will work with both

Not much of a hassle using a template for *0# on my phone its options,2,3 and its there. O2's is free also where Orange charge a penny, suppose it depends how often you use it.

On my phone it seems to be (from Create Message screen) Options, scroll down 5 items to Templates and its there. I suppose I will get used to it.

Orange may charge, but if you're on a contract with thousands of or unlimited free texts you don't pay for them.

they charged me 1p even though i was on the dophlin tariff and had unlimited texts

That is correct no text allowances will cover your delivery reports on Orange, they are charged at 1p each.

On most phones a number on the keypad will correspond to one of the options, so you may not need to scroll down 5 times.

O2's CS isn't exactly wonderful. They are somewhat over zealous in their interpretation of would be customers' credit rating as well, given that you aren't (I presume) making off with an iPhone.
PAYG networks with delivery reports: Tesco are the same as O2 so it's the template job, but it does work; T Mobile fine; Vodafone fine; Orange - not sure they charge PAYG customers for reports but they do charge contract customers. Don't know about 3, Asda, Virgin.

They never charged me for any. I was on their Text 3000 contract and never paid for any delivery reports.

Never had a problem with O2 CS so i dont know what all the complaints and fuss are about!

I have to say that I wouldn't rely on delivery reports. At best they only tell you the phone received the message (not that it was read) and at worst, in some circumstances, only that the message has entered the receiving network. They are also low priority on the network so can be delayed at busy times.

Well I've just now had my 2nd experience with them and am again left distinctly underwhelmed.

I have got my PAC code from Orange, gone to the O2 web site to enter the details and it doesn't work! Their web site I mean. When I enter the first page of details in the Keep My Number process, it then takes me to a "what's your query" page! Totally hopeless.

So I call O2 to sort it out. They are "in the middle of updating customers records" so can't take my details right now, can I call back later (answer = no, because am going out for rest of the day). So I have to wait till tomorrow to give them my PAC code, thus delaying the changeover by another day. (Or maybe not as I suspect nothing would start to happen on it until Monday?)

Maybe so, but I like the knowledge that the message has been received. I've got used to having it and am stunned that O2 don't support it as a matter of course.

Exactly! Delivery reports are essential. I wont be using either Orange (who charge) or O2 (its a pain to sort them) in the near future then!

I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to mobile providers actual features.

For me, there's more than just x minutes and x texts... I am greedy and want more!

I use Vodafone at the moment, and like them because:

They do SMS delivery reports - for free

I can have my mobile voicemail off, and if someone calls while the phone is unavailable i get a free SMS saying who called.

As far as i can tell, only Vodafone do totally free missed call alerts, as in, the caller also does not pay to reach your voicemail.

I also have call conferencing enabled on my phone, so can carry out quick conferences in the event of a situation where i need a few people to get some important information.

I did order an Orange pay monthly SIM just the other day, got it yesterday - but had nothing but trouble getting it registered / getting through to support to have voicemail turned off - i called up to cancel it within an hour.

I think Vodafone are the most featureful network - even though featureful is not a word.

Vodafone's support is also in the UK, and they seem to be very quick and helpful.

Well, there you have it - my opinion!

Orange are no better, try to register your pay as you go sim online (in order to be able to use it) and more often than not, when you enter the sim serial number and click next, you get a message saying something along the lines of "Sorry, we are having a few technical difficulties, we are aware of the problem" it never seems to work properly. Also i found that calling 453 (to check balance) has quite a few problems like not telling you your extras information if you have any. Then there's the call centre, Indian? No thank you! I was on Vodafone a few years back and used to use delivery reports all the time. But when i moved to O2 (mainly because most people i know are on it and for the free texts on Online PAYG) i found out that delivery reports are not supported and i lived with that and will need a very good reason to leave O2 now. And until one does come up, i'm staying with them

Delivery reports are pointless anyway. Ss said before in this thread somewhere, they don't tell you if the text has been read, they only tell you if it has been received and because of this all they do is create more congestion on the networks and clog them up with unnecessary messages!

Orange for me...

Mainly as it's a staff plan, and my bills are rarely over a fiver!

Free delivery reports/Orange calls/Orange texts/0800/Orange Care/Voicemail and 2p/1p for 0845/0870

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this, but why not just phone them?!

I really don't get all this texting malarkey, especially if it's in the case of the elderly/infirm or ill. Surely they would welcome more a reassuring human voice down the phone? Just a thought.
