As others have said, I can't quite see the rationale for having MC week when it is the cardinal sin to attempt one of her songs.

I had those in mind - and Close Every Door, but for Michael not Jason. I guess Jason could do it now though. I also thought of If I Were A Rich Man for Jason[/i]No Matter What for either Jason or Chikezie (I did this a while ago!) and Oh What A Night for Chikezie or Michael.

I also wondered about Another Suitcase In Another Hall, maybe for Brooke.

Not too familiar with Oh What A Circus, did wonder about a Queen song for DC from We Will Rock You but so many have been used now - he could do Can You Feel The Love Tonight though, that would be lovely!

I think Carly should do Cabaret, and Kristy should do weither Maybe This Time (having seen Sarah on I'll Do Anything sing it and remind me slightly of Kristy especially with the lyrics) or Roxie from Chicago.

I also thought of Sandy from Grease for David A - the song, not the role as my mum thought when I suggested it!

It's going to be a better week than MC week i reckon - at leasdt there are a few decent songs to choose from!

Andrew Lloyd Webber week is restricted to only songs written by ALW so that narrows the choice down.

Apparently they're flying to Vegas and rehearsing their songs with him on the set of Phantom there which should make good viewing.

Ansildrall, for the most part those choices make sense, except...Fantasy? For Kristy?
For overall range, power, and vocal dexterity, Fantasy is probably THE toughest Mariah song. I say this from experience. Fantasy is barely within my unstrained range, and I have four strong octaves. I would rate that as one of the top 5 most difficult pop songs of all time.
I think Syesha could do better than Hero, actually.She would be great singing Dreamlover, I think.
Heartbreaker could be interesting for David C.

I can't stand Mariah Carey - if only 10% of what is said about her in the press is right she seems to be a real prima donna.

Love or hate her, Mariah has a huge range and a technically great voice in many respects.

Carly-I do think without you will suit her. It is set low, and her low range is wonderful. All I Ever Wanted could work too, as long as she didn't power through it too hard.

David C--Open Arms or Against All Odds are the obvious choices. I Still Believe could be interesting.Forever could be great if he did a 50s rock vibe for it.

Syesha-Dreamlover , but I am not sure she has enough control of her high range to manage a couple of the runs. But I suspect she probably can and just hasn't shown it yet. Someday could be fun, and a sly statement as well...she could manage the low 6th octave whistle note in this song, I think. Love Takes Time would be gorgeous with her vocal style.....she is the only one who could take on a variety of Mariah's songs.

Brooke--A folked out half-Mariah/half Def Leopard version of Bringin On The Heartbreak could be interesting...Ill be there is an obvious choice but likely will be saved for David A...I Still Believe, maybe....

David A--I'll Be There...easy vocal, his style if he Jackson5's it....or My All, for similar reasons. Hero=easy to sing and popular, so will probably be his if he doesn't sing IBT...
Jason--Honey in an odd way could work for Jason...or we belong together.
Kristy-Hero or, more likely, always be my baby, as it is the only Mariah song she could manage the notes on passably.

Kristy would be amazing if she done Hero.

Superstar, you keep posting that in every thread...why do you think Kristy would sound good singing Hero? It is a song that requires , at the very least,a smooth or rich tone, reasonably good dynamics and control, and a reasonable range,all of wich most semi-pro or pro vocalists have and none of which Kristy has.
Kristy seems like a nice enough person, but she just isn't in the same league as professional, or even semi-professional vocalists, which makes her the weakest of this years top 7 on Idol by a long way. At best, she might make it singing on cruise ships or at holiday camps, although some who do that are quite good,and most people who perform at those are as good or at a higher standard than Kristy.

tend to agree with you on this one singy. Kristy is a nice girl and can obviously hold a tune but so can my nan, doesn't mean she's gonna get a recording contract! thing is, she's got very little charisma on stage and although in the States country music is more popular, its still for the most part not mainstream enough for young voters to get. So without her being outstandingly amazing and sparkling on stage she's never going to get the following she needs to win. Sad but true.

At least two people (Jason and Brooke) have weaker voices than Kristy, but they have instruments to hide behind. Carly has very little vocal control - she may sing bigger songs than Kristy but her performances are never as consistent as Kristy's throughout. Syesha has the same problem as Carly but to a lesser extent.

DA has a strong case in his favour and DC is my favourite (Kristy 2nd but I love both!) but she's definitely up there with them.

As Mariah herself proves, having a good vocal range in terms of octaves isn't as important as it may seem. In their way, at the opposite end of the scale, Jason and Brooke prove the same thing. I've found listening to some of Mariah's music this week in preparation for the theme that I can't always understand her lyrics or hear emotion in her voice, because she's overusing her range. I think I have abvout two relatively low (for a teenage girl) octaves and am careful to make the most of them when interpreting the song, without needing to use every note I can hit!

My range is actually reasonably similar to Kristy's, which isn't why I'm defending hers but may be part of the reason that I identify with her. I think she can sing with great emotion, and diction on at least most of her songs. It's a myth that she's the weakest singer left in any way. That's how she's been made to look but that is not the case.

You might be speaking from experience but everyone's experience is different. I went to the last X Factor boot camp (and got the impression I was eliminated because I was too vulnerable rather than anything to do with my singing) so I know my stuff too and there are plenty of singers working at every level of professionalism who are worse than Kristy - but are probably still good!

What I said about Kristy is not my opinion of all singers with a range like hers at all. Brooke has a similar range to Kristy, but she makes lovely use of it. I agree, it is not all about range.As for 'hiding behind instruments', another way to look at it is, they may have developed other talents that allow them to 'sing' with a piano or guitar as well as their voices. Some people who don't have strong voices are amazingly talented and musically gifted.
I also have to disagree on another point...there are very few SUCCESSFUL(able to make a living/work long term) singers on any level who are not better than Kristy, and I mean overall, not just her range.She just seems to try to look cute and hit the notes and never makes any interesting choices and to me that is just dull.
I have my reasons for my opinion, and others have theirs. Not all agree, but that is okay.
In fairness to Kristy, it is possible that she has not been allowed to show her best on this season of Idol...it seems to me there isn't much there, but maybe it's down to unfair editing or poor song choices most weeks.....having thought along those lines, I re-thought my suggestions.....a country version of Mariah's 'forever' in Kristy's key might actually be quite good, if she connected with the song.

Npthing wrong with Jason or Brooke playing instruments - so do both Davids but they are much strongerr singers, and AI is a singing competition so being able to play an ninstrument should only be considered a bonus. I get the impression that some people lookj past Jason ands Brooke's v0cal shortcomings and consider them stronger than Kristy because they play instruments.

As for Brooke I don't think she does make such lovely use of her voicer as Kristy, she can sing but doesn't usually bring much to her performances, or misinterprets the lyrics, which I haven't noticed from Kristy.

Kristy wouldn't need any more of a vocal range than she has to tackle any song in her own way, nobody would. Plenty of massive selling acts such as Madonna, Kylie (and of course Dannii) the Spice Girls and Britney Spears are much weaker singers than Kristy. and aq lot of successful "singers" don't sing live these days like she does.

I do think her best performances have been those where she has been most true to herself such as last week, but to me she's also improved a lot since the top 24. She wasn't my favourite girl until top 16 night but no one could overtake her now and on some occasions her performances have probably been better than David's - last week the overall effect of hers was better but mainly because David's backing vocals were so loud.
It's true that we all have our opinions, mine are obviously very biased towards Kristy and David, but for good reasons

Mel C from Spice Girls and Madonna are both actually reasonably strong singers, although not technically great.Also, both have written their own material, with success, and both are great performers . I won't argue that Kylie, Danni and Britney could never be accused of having great voices, but to Britney's credit she is a great entertainer/dancer and wrote a lot of her own material. I don't like much of her music, but respect that it is well crafted. Kylie is certainly comparable to Kristy, but she became a success during the Stock/Aikmen/Waterman era.She is a triumph of marketing, which is fine, and good for her....but it is rare for someone to be that lucky.
I am not saying Kristy is talentless, only that there are so many who are as good who look and sound like her, especially in the Nashville area and other country-music-leaning parts of america, that she will have a long and difficult path to success with slim chance of making it.
Why would anyone give a reasonably good but limmited singer a contract when there are so many who are as good or better to choose from,some of whom have at least one or more standout features, such as the killer range/ability, or ability to play instrument/s well, or write good songs, or are great at owning a stage, and many of whom are as attractive and likeable as Kristy?
It could happen, but considering she was already signed to a label and subsequently dropped after failing, why would a record label want to take the risk again?Great on her for not giving up, but in the real world, she will likely need more than a reasonable voice and image to make it.
On an unfair to her note, Carrie is already doing very well,as well as Kellie Pickler, so they don't need Kristy, who is similar to Carrie.
All the same, she has already gotten herself further than most people with her level of ability ever get, and I totally respect that. With effort, she may overcome the odds, although I don't think Idol is going to be where that happens.
I do think David has given some good performances, and sometimes I really enjoy listening to him .

There is only one Andrew Lloyd Webber song for David Cook. Gethsemane. If he doesn't get to sing it, I swear I'll cry.

It's not a classic ALW song, but I'd expect someone would get Whistle Down The Wind - instinctively I'd give it to David A or Kirsty, but as it's not the most challenging song, it could go to Brooke or Jason.

So after some great themes with original song choices/arrangements, that you don't normally see on talent shows like this, they are now restricting the song choices to one artist per week? And not particularly exciting artists, at that. :sleep:

As much as I've enjoyed this series, which is suprising as I normally detest these kind of shows, I don't know if I'll bother if they carry on with these themes.
