Just got a Viewty - Help needed with the camera
Sigmatic
28-03-2008
I got a Viewty today and I'm very pleased with it, although I can't get the camera to take a decent photo. Pics always look either blurry or grainy. I've got most of the settings on auto and I'm using the 5MP highest quality setting. Am I doing something wrong? What settings do you recommend to get the best out of the camera?

Thanks in advance.

I used to work for t-mobile(technically still do but anyway) I do remember getting a call saying something about the camera...well I'm sure it was the viewty...and they just couldn't get a decent pic whatever they did...and it turned out was faulty handset(not saying it is the same in your case)

Sorry not been much help

have you got the auto focus on?
It's not like most camera phones where one press and it takes a photo. Hold the capture button and it'll focus and take it.

Before I read the manual I was just pressing the button, but then I read about the autofocus, however it doesn't seem to make a difference. I took a few test shots outside and they look OK when resized down to 800x600, but at full res they look horribly compressed. The file size doesn't seem right for what's supposed to be a 5MP picture either.

There was a faulty batch of camera drivers at some stage.

It should help - people have the same issues.

The blurry could be from you moving the camera after the shutter noise is made. keep it completely still and in position until the taken picture appears on your screen as done, that should improve the blurryness. As for the grainy, mine takes them fine, with these settings:

image size: 5m
image quality: super fine
white balance: auto
ISO: iso 100
colour tone: normal
macro: on
and auto focus on.

frost, what settings do you find give you the quickest shutter closure?

I havent noticed anything change the shutter speed, at least not by any noticable amount of time.

Though I have the mode setting to Auto. Possibly changing that to portrait, landscape, night, beach, sport or party from the list might make a difference depending on the situation, beyond that I wouldnt know.

Frost, here's two test pics taken with those exact settings: -

http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/3098/testpic2gu1.jpg

Both of them look like complete crap to me.

Also, unless I have the ISO setting on automatic, the flash won't work. Here is the same shot taken with the ISO setting on auto, so that the flash will activate: -

I've got an old 2MP camera that takes better shots than that. Look how bad the wall looks behind the bottle of amaretto.

Do you think the phone is faulty? The camera's as good as useless like this.

Here's a couple taken off mine. The second one was with the flash. Just for comparisons sake to yours.
Do they look any better to you?

Hmm, those arent great. Below is one I just took right now with these settings.

Keeping in mind that I just took without considering any glare from the sun and that it had to be resized to send it from my phone to the pc, as I dont have a suitable memory card yet and the software doesnt work so I cant transfer the picture correctly. I think the quality is fine.

Maybe your camera is faulty.

It seems to be the phone's image processing/compression that causes the problems. When I take a picture it looks great on the LCD screen, but then if I take another and go back and re-load the first, I can already tell that some of the quality is gone, even on a screen that small.

I can't really compare my images to the ones you guys are posting, because you've resized yours which will make them look sharper.

Might sound stupid, but have you taken the plastic cover off the camera lens? Or tried wiping/cleaning it?

A bad error on the phone settings is, when you change something, you have to do one at a time and save after each ie. change image size - save, change image quality - save etc. For some reason, if you go and change a few things at once, then save, it wouldn't have saved all the settings you did. I heard about this on a youtube review video of the phone, and tested it myself to be true. Have you perhaps saved some settings in this way but infact nothing has changed? Just a suggestion though

Mine seems to take pretty good pictures, but is no way as good as my digital camera, which is 7mp, but nonetheless, shouldn't be 'THAT' different.

Is that X23 on your wallpaper?
Cool

Sorry for the resizing, I just took a couple for you and bluetoothed them over.

Cheers for the post Captn. I had already checked all of those things unfortunately. My Viewty died today though so I'll be getting a replacement later in the week. I'll see what the images are like with the new one.

Sigmatic, your Viewty died? It must have been a bad one then.
I've had no probs with mine since I got it.
I am terrified of dropping it though, i think i'm going to take out insurance asap.
