I feel like I can't keep having this same argument over and over again: when most weeks the majority of contestants perform a carbon copy of the original song (THEY ALL FREAKING DO IT!!!!), what then is the difference of another contestant performing a similar varied arrangement that another artist has previously recorded? No matter what you may say, David Cook has never taken credit for any arrangements; he has simply accepted the deserved praise the judges have seeped on him, and they have only done this because as a performer, he absolutely justifies it. From his vocals, his stage presence, his on-screen persona, his absolute love of the stage - he transcends the teeny-bopper mould that these shows originated with. (I refuse to bow down to the ignorant *beepers* whose only enjoyment of the show comes from dissing it on VFTW anyway - why watch it if you clearly feel you have better things to do with your time?! - Oh that's right, you actually
don't - Oopsie daisy, I digress from the issue at hand here) An important issue I must address particularly is the accusation that David Cook's "Hello" in any way resembles the Incubus version - it does not: Brandon Boyd sings this song in a style not massively dissimilar to the Lionel Ritchie original - as for instrumental arrangement, the band did not strip it down to one guitar, instead they maintained the more theatrical/ballad-style arrangement of the original. I take exception to the fact that David Cook is being criticised far more than any other contestant this year, seemingly solely for the fact that he is growing in popularity and being lauded for the incredible talent that he is. His years slaving away in fairly localised bands, only to be given the opportunity to record his own material, proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was meant for this and he will succeed no matter what happens over the coming weeks. (Personally I really hope he doesn't win it; what a morbid victory that would be - having to sing a typical "Idol" winners single, and going on to record an album of covers and borefests as he would undoubtedly be contractually obliged to do - god help us all - as if the weekly group songs weren't torture enough

)
I found it as hilarious and torturous as the next person that David mentioned browsing itunes every week to find unique and fitting interpretations of his song choice in this week's behind the scenes snippet, but should this discredit him at all? We must remember that he is a competitor in 'American Idol', a show planned down to the very last screaming fan girl, and that each week he has only a very limited time to pick a song, work on a suitable arrangement that Ricky Minor and co can work with, do all the commercial jazz (Ford, interview after interview, make-up tests - although clearly last week they didn't do enough of that, or maybe too much, definitely too much rouge on those cheeks,
dude! - rehearsals, and heaven forfend they get any downtime), I would imagine it be very constraining to actually do anything truly original. Ultimately of course, it is a singing contest, and the vocals are what should rate above all else, and in that respect, he deserves every ounce of love his fans give him. All I can really say is for *beep's* sake, wait for him to release his own (second!) record, then we'll see who thinks he's unoriginal, uninspired, a cheat... VFTW readers need to get a life, and haters on this forum need to get some perspective...
