The clocks go forward at 1am. Sunday morning. [ 30 March 2008]

Every time this happens we have a rash of people whose machine clocks do no change immediately or timer programmes that end up an hour wrong and recordings are missed or are incorrect.

It can be quite difficult to programme ahead under such conditions because machine behaviour can be unpredictable.

So just a general warning to keep a check on your machines if you have timers programmed over tonight and the next day or so.

Hmm, I just noticed my Panasonic EX85 is currently displaying the time an hour behind. I don't know if it has been doing this since the clocks changed, but I doubt it, since all programmes so far have been recorded at their correct times, up to yesterday. We'll see if it gets Countdown right this afternoon.

I went into setup and switched the clock setting from auto to manual, and then back to auto. It said it was fetching the time, and still showed it an hour out.

Anyone know if there is anything wrong with the unit or the transmitted time?

My Panasonic IDTV is showing the time correctly, but I couldn't find anywhere in the setup menus or the manual about setting the clock.

This is probably down to corrupt data lying around in buffers and will probably be cured by doing a power reset.

Disconnect the unit from the mains for 5 to 10 minutes.

Well.... I was about to say that sounded rather implausible, but I thought I ought to at least go and try it first.

I first set the clock back to automatic, and it still pulled in the wrong value. So I switched the unit off and unplugged the mains for a few minutes. When I plugged it back in, after it had said "Please wait" for a minute or two, I went back to auto clock setting and it got it right!!

Is this a quirk of the Panasonic? Anyway, many thanks!

BTW, it had indeed missed Countdown (before I did the above), and recorded part of Deal or No Deal instead.

The problem is caused by damaged data coming in via the epg... This data can get stuck and cause problems like this.

Theoretically any machine could suffer this but it will depend on its capabilities and configuration as to how it is affected.

The effects can vary from quirks like the one you suffered, to total lockups.

My Sony RDR-HXD710 is currently showing the wrong time and all the programme listings in the EPG show stuff starting 1 hour early (e.g. The Apprentice is showing as 8.00 to 9.00) BUT my already set recordings are showing with their correct times (e.g. The Apprentice recording is set for 9.00-10.00 so yes I have missed it. Ho hum).

It has been working fine since the clocks changed a few days ago (have made several successful timer recordings) but something has broken it this afternoon or similar.

My other (el cheapo Asda) freeview box is showing the correct time.

Will try a big reset later on.
