Most reality TV, even if its billed as a "contest", is first and foremost a TV Show, so the viewer should never expect all contestants to get fair shake. The producers have the important remit to make a "show" leading to a certain conclusion that is tempered by the popular vote but they also have the power to de-popularise any contestant they want, all in the interest of providing good TV.

If the producers do not know the "ending" of a story, how can they create the episodes that lead to the final. Of course, the "team" of judges and ALW conspire to promote certain outcomes, after all they are trying to will the audience to select the one person they themselves have auditioned for the part.

Dress, music, song choice, lighting and camera work are all utilised to boost or spoil a performers image on the small screen to achieve this end. Its never been a fair contest and nor was Maria or Joseph and the very idea that "Any dream will do" was quickly replaced by "so long as its the dream I want you to have". Avoiding the obvious, such as forced song choices that are then criticised, would be a good idea but the public very often do not notice these contradictions.

When the Auditions were completed, ALW and his team then set about building a final 12 around the one they selected for the part. The whole idea is that it seems like a "contest" and not a walk-over. To do this they include "hated" characters, great singers unsuitable to the part and then point them out to us every week in the full knowledge that the gullable public will send them on their way. Great singers and actors (who may have compromised their "selected" player) are dispatched to the cutting room floor and people like Nancy Nancy don't get a part in the "show".

Maybe I am just an old cynic, or maybe I have seen too much reality tv, but we, as dutiful public, always deliver "the required result".

Plot gets more complicated. Captain Jack has noted that Samantha doesn't connect but ALW thinks she is a Nancy. Sarah wasn't claimed to be tough/rough enough until Denise suggested after the acting she could be. Jessie is a great singer but Denise claims her acting is inconsistent. Rachel is in the Kat Slater class and is still getting good singing reports. Niamh seems to be doing well quietly.

I am so disappointed in this show! Have watched the previous shows and thoroughly enjoyed them but there is something about this one that really, really annoys me!

To me all the girls appear to be overacting and show that they are so, so desperate for the part of Nancy (the desperation of the girls and boys in Maria and Joseph never really showed like it does with this group of girls)

To be perfectly honest there is not one girl after watching this weeks show that really stands out for me who could play the part of Nancy.

I liked Jodie at the start in the auditions and thought she could be Nancy but after this weeks show I have changed my mind.

There is no doubt that the 3 Irish girls and Samantha (IOM) are the best by far, holding all the aces in acting and singing. Rachel (Belfast) Kat Slater remark may be on the button, Niamh (Bangor) reminding them of Bernadette Peters ( google her says Graham- 23yrs ago) and Samantha (IOM) looking like Zeta Jones, just one of those is a huge compliment. Jesse (Co Kerry) is a very very raw talent but may not have the discipline necessary. ALW is big on the "acting while singing, singing while acting" and only 2 of the girls are doing that well.

Totally disagree on the issue of Niamh, 'holding all the aces in acting and singing'? When has she shown any acting prowess? I'd say she's one of the worst actresses.

That was not what I wrote but in any case Andrew seems to disagree with you.

Well, Andrew thought that Lewis was better than Daniel So it wouldn't be the first time I've not seen eye to eye with him.

And therein lies the problem with this ... ALW has his idea of what he wants ... the public have an idea of what they want - and clearly often they are not the same. I do agree with other posters that Lewis fitted the 'type' of Joseph ALW wanted ... but the public didn't buy into that. Editing and poor song choice goes a little way towards helping manipulating the result - but only so far.
