I was engaging in Owen style Torchwood speak to make a point.

For all its faults Torchwood is a unique show.

I doubt there will ever be another gay friendly sci-fi show for example.

But that very uniqueness is predicated on its vanity project status.

I mean come on.

Gay boys running around Cardiff chasing aliens.

Torchwood is a show designed by RTD for his mates.

Look, if you dont like it why dont you just say so I for one, prefer it to Dr Who. Ive come to like the characters and some of the show have been superb. The recent one about the kid who went missing, only to turn up, a lot older and dissfigured was superb and very emotional. BBC shows should not be all about who gets the largest figures. Quality also counts, and Torchwood is definitely that.

The point that keep these threads going is that some of us don't think that is the case.

And, as they say, ne'er the twain shall meet.

True, one mans meat and all that. But what bugs me is that the ones that dont like it suggesting it should finish ( not just Torchwood but ANY programme that someone dislikes).
these people need to be tollerant of other peoples likes and just avoid these programmes. It always seems to be the case of many ignorant people on this site (and others) that " I dont like it, so it should go". That is a pathetic, childish attitude.

My relationship with Torchwood is much more complicated.

It's like a ginger headed step child I've become grudgingly accustomed to.

That's a very apt description for how I felt about Series 1. I didn't really like any of the characters (not even Jack that much, detested Gwen) but I kept watching it because it was related to DW.

Series 2 however feels much more like I've adopted the child. The characters are more rounded and sympathetic (even Gwen) and I'm looking forward to S3.

(To be fair to S1 there were some great eps; for me Countrycide, Random Shoes and the 2 part finale).

Cheers,
Jeff

Well it's April now and Torchwood hasn't been cancelled. Wikipedia wasn't accurate! How will I ever recover from this shocking revelation!!!

Whether this is new information or not, I don't know, but most of the Torchwood production crew have committed to other projects, as there's no sign of a 3rd series. I'm not just pulling this information out of thin air either, before anyone asks!

Rumours I've heard include:

Torchwood production is moving to London (unlikely due to expense), and Eastenders will be filmed in Cardiff, as the London sets are falling down (they were only meant to be temporary apparently), and it's cheaper to build a permanent set in Cardiff.

Probably a load of nonsense though.

I'm sorry, but what a rediculous argument.

To up the ratings we should stop simulcasting anything on BBC HD? Why should we have to wait an extra week just because we want to see it in the format it was filmed in???

Torchwood is filmed in HD thus should be shown in HD. END OF!!!

I agree that it's a ridiculous argument. The answer is to accept that the multi-channel era is well and truly with us, and that if you want to measure the viewing figures of a show you should add all the viewings within 7 days of broadcast, whether they are on the original channel, a High Def simulcast, an (edited) repeat, or a VCR/PVR recording. Or iPlayer!

It's easy for anyone here to make statements about the (mis)fortunes of a show based on any headline figure. Fortunately I'm sure the powers that be are well aware of the bigger picture, and do indeed refer to all the ways a programme is viewed when they are making their decisions.

Not that that would necessarily stop them making stupid decisions anyway!

Eastenders is relocating - but to Pinewood studios, so you were correct in it being a load of nonsense

Why I thank you. You're my new friend. LOL!

I agree, just like the way that the music industry has now incorporated downloads into single sales and lumped them together to provide a much more accurate representation of what people are buying regardless of the method.

I also agree that they are fully aware of the viewing figures across the board.

I would be shocked if TW did not get a third series for the following reasons:

The BBC will need to give something to Who fans whilst we only have the specials next year
James Marsters has indicated he will likely return to filming at some point
There have been worse shows with lower ratings that have got more series
Whether you like it or not a lot of people like it.
Torchwood most definitely is a vanity project.

RTD wanted to make a sci-fi themed show called Excalibur & he was able to leverage his Doctor Who connections to make that a reality.

No Doctor Who no Torchwood.”

Originally Torchwood was going to be called Excalibur, reference made in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang"

AND if they have ANY sense they'll know the size of the fanbase!

To be fair it's not that difficult to know 10 people by name.

At the risk of sounding like a 'Torchwood apologist' I reckon they should move it to BBC1, 9pm on Saturdays, up the budget and it would get between 5 and 7 million IMO.

I am.

It is *definately* not cancelled. Maybe not going to be formatted in exactly the same way next year, but *definately* not cancelled, and work on it has already started.

Fair enough - I stand corrected!
How do you know this to be true?

Excellent point, and I was just about to say the same thing. I haven't watched one episode of Torchwood on TV this time around - I kept on missing it, AND BBC 2 Wales (at least - not sure about around the UK) changed the day to Friday... I'm never around on a Friday night.

I tend to watch more programmes online now.

To back up the OP pre production has already started on series 3 - well in so far as writers are being contracted and initial meetings being held. I spoke to someone today who knows one of the series 3 writers rather well.
