Seriously though David's not doing anything different to any of the other contestants. They are ALL doing cover versions of the songs they sing. David is just being very clever picking the versions that suit him best and in the process is making a bigger impact

They all sing covers. They don't even have the final say on which songs they perform. I have nothing against David C. If he is allowed to perform songs that showcase his talent, hey, good for him. The show is what it is.

Until the show ends David will have to perform covers but once its finished he will do his own music. Apparently he already had another album done before he went on AI.

It was introduced as Chris Cornell's cover version, so I can't see what his point is. On the one hand he's saying it's a good thing, on the other he's saying David was being given the credit for the arrangement.

I'd never heard of Chris Cornell before and went and looked his version up on Youtube. If anything, it will give him a good bit of free PR, which can't be a bad thing.

From what i remember it was only on the results show they mentioned that it was Chris Cornell's version. I was wrong on this it was mentioned in the introduction.
It did appear to me anyway they were giving all this praise to David Cook for the arrangement, when if you listen to the Chris Cornell version its clear there was nothing original about David's which is fine but credit where credits due.
I think Chris was saying that it was good PR when he was saying its all good.

The version on his album is a bit different, smoother and less intense. I've been a big of his voice and his work for a long time, especially in Soundgarden and also Temple of the Dog. That other Chris - Chris Daughtry said that if he could duet with anyone in music it would be Chris Cornell. Speaking of CD, he actually got into a similar situation on AI when he was accused of performing Live's version of Walk The Line without crediting their version. So nothing really new here.

If David Cook brings more attention to Corny's work then it's all good.

It is a shame that the judges commented on the originality. If they had focused on the rendition which was very very good, there wouldn't have been so much controversy.

But overall the controversy was good advertising for Chris Cornell who was not previously that well known, even in the US.

I don't base my opinion on song choices, as they don't perform their owm material anyway. I pay attention to the vocals, to how they deliver the song, I watch the performance, and I ignore the judges babbling because they can't really hear what's going on with the acoustics in that place anyway. David C was actually the my favorite this week of the guys of who are still in this season, regardless of song choice, although having an arangement that suits him didn't hurt.He sang well.
