I'm thinking about buying a Panasonic plasma TV, either the TH37PX80B or the TH42PX80B. Other than the screen size, are there any differences between the two?
Also, do these TVs have picture-in-picture capability?

Thanks, H

The 37" has 720 vertical pixels, the 42" 768. That is the only difference and no there is no PiP.

Thanks for the info ... shame as I had almost convinced myself to go for plasma as it is better for sports viewing (but I don't have Sky or HD), so it looks like I will be going for a Sony Bravia instead ... unless someone can convinve me otherwise !!!

why have you come to that conclusion.

if your not going to be running sky HD even more reason to stick with the panny than an LCD

its been mentioned on here time and time again SD on a plasma is better than an LCD.

Sony LCD is getting there for SD but i still have not seen them produce a better SD picture than a panny or pioneer plasma

good luck with your choice

I don't understand the problem with absence of PiP, isn't the idea of a large HD ready plasma to get the best picture quality for the price? Plasmas (especially Panasonics in your price range) seem to currently give that, but all PiP insets are distinctly low quality. Also, I wonder if there's a risk of image retention with PiP on a plasma?

If I want PiP, I can switch to my DVD recorder input to get it, but I never ever use that facility. The Pana 42TX80 is all I ever wanted from a TV, I can't stop watching films (at SD) since I got it and I hardly ever did that before.

I can thoroughly recommend the Panasonic 37 PX series for watching SD. It blows the socks of most LCDs and will be great as and when you get free HD (freesat free HD is due soon).

The only comments that I have seen about the difference is that the SD picture is slightly less good on the 42 inch because of the greater screen size.

We chose the 37 because it suits our room size and viewing distance and we are very happy.

If viewing SD TV and being HD proof is mostly what you want you will struggle to do better for the money than a Panasonic.

Agree with your first paragraph. Regarding the second, if you sit 12 inches further away for the 42, the picture is likely to look just the same as the 37.

Both sets need one upscale on SD (from 720x576 to 1024x720 or 1024x768) so the pictures should look the same when sitting at the correct viewing distance for the screen size (it's a foot different - around 9' vs. 8' on typical SD material).
