The Radiohead make-your-own-remix thing at http://www.radioheadremix.com/ looks like fun, but why are they charging 79p per "stem"?

The way it works, you have to download each stem (ie individual voice or instrumental track) from the song Nude, and then do whatever you like with them in a program such as Garageband or Logic. But each stem is priced as if it's a complete song, so it costs £4.95 just to get all the parts.

Of course that's more than most people paid for the whole of In Rainbows.

Strikes me they are having a laugh. Is this really in the spirit of Radiohead's stance against corporate greed etc?

I suspect XL wanted to monetise it not the band. There's no DRM on them I presume.

£4.95 for all parts of ONE SONG!! My god that's awful.

I wonder what was stopping them giving them away for free ala Nine inch nails? And that was an entire album's worth.

It's also wrong. I apologise for giving the wrong price, I didn't do my maths properly.

The correct price is £4.74 including the original song and a Garageband file to work with. Or £3.95 without the original but including the Garageband file. The "stems" are DRM free iTunes Plus files.

I still think it's a bit much to expect bedroom remixers to pay 79p per stem. The authorship/copyright in the finished mixes remains with Radiohead so you're not allowed to reuse the stems for other mixes either.

That's till a lot of money imo. The only thing I take away from this is that they must have lost a lot of money on In Rainbows.
Shame really, there's always going to be a bit of trial and error in alternative distribution methods, but they shouldn't really ripp off the fans to make up for it.

That won't stop the parts being bootlegged from now til next Xmas. Trent Reznor doesn't seem to mind about that sort of thing.
