Budget Alcohol
Okay, so you really fancy a drink from the off license, but you don't have that much money. What kind or brands of alcohol do you buy?
I ask because at the moment, I am having a vodka and coke. I paid full price for a bottle of diet coke, but bought Glens vodka, which in my opinion tastes just as good as more expensive vodkas when mixed. What would you have bought from your local off license? |

Where I get off my train to get the bus home. Mr Ahmed is currently selling three cans of Skol lager for a £1. I keep meaning to ask him who is suppliers are.

Toilet Duck
![]() I buy lots of booze at christmas when it's silly cheap (60 bottles for £20! etc) then keep it in the garage for the rest of the year. I've done it the last couple of years, and I usually get enough to last until mid year ! It means I don't use the offie much. |

What is cheap whisky and vodka like? I've often been tempted to the supermarket own-brand stuff but never tried it..

I buy supermarket gin and can't taste any difference to Gordons. You can get a litre for the price of a bottle.

i agree with the op - its better to spend money on the cheap mixers especially if you are mixing with cheap vodka. cheap cola can ruin a pefectly decent bottle of polski

I only ever buy cheap Vodka. The only time i have expensive stuff is when i get it as a present.
I ALWAYS buy a bottle of Glens voddy on a Friday night ready for the weekend. It really doesnt taste any different to expensive vodka if you mix it with coke, tonic or orange juice. |

I don't know if it's Glen's, but the cheap (not 'value' brand) vodka at asda is OK if you mix it.
On the whiskies, i'm by no means a connoiseur (sp?) but the asda single malts are good for the price. I've had the speyside and the islay, very nice... |

I'd buy a bottle of wine or 6 bottles of bud, I don't really sit in the house and drink spirits unless it's a house party.

I used to buy store brand vodkas from the big supermarket, and personally never noticed much difference in taste, although I think with the higher brands of vodka you tend to get a much smoother taste. Anyway, I've since given up spirits so I don't think about it much anymore, lol.
I do like to indulge in a bit of cider when the mood takes though. I wouldn't touch those cheap as chips, high percent bottles that teens everywhere have enjoyed at some point or another though, lol. Personally, I quite like the supermarket brands you can get. Not the cheapest ones, but the ones advertised as "vintage". It's got a nicer taste and isn't badly priced. It's only a few pounds at the max for a litre or so, and it has got a slightly higher volume than the usual stuff. You can get decent booze for not much money at all from the supermarkets. As other posters have said, the big promotions that usually occur around the holidays are always good to stock up, but other than that, it's certainly preferable in my book to try your nearest Sainsburys or Tescos rather than opt for a bottle of gut wrenching off license cheap as chips stuff. |
