Hi,

I have just moved into a new flat - yesterday actually.

And when i phoned BT up they said that a line was in the flat - i did not have to pay the connection charge of £125 because they did not need to re-connect. They said it would take 10days for it to go into my name which is fair enough because apparently its in someone elses at the moment.

However, my question is - should i be getting a dial tone from the phone sockets in the flat because there are 4 and all are BT sockets but not one of them has a dial tone to it??

I am just worried that even when the line is 'active' i dont think its going to work. If i should be getting a dial tone can i phone BT and report the fault even though its not in my name yet?

Many Thanks,

Daniel

usually when you "takeover" a line there is dialtone present however you cannot make or recieve calls on it until it's activated. sometimes the dialtone can be ceased all together in which case they normally charge the installation fee. the chances are the line is still showing as stopped to that address but the pair has been used to provide service elsewhere, in which case a visit would be req'd to re-connect you. it might be worth while just giving them a bell and saying that you don't have a dial tone and see if they can raise a job for us to come and sort it out.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have called BT and the lady said she cansee the line is active but she said it does not mean there needs to be a dial tone and that she could set a job up for it but the engeniers would not do anything until the line was active (in my name)even though the line is currently active.

I have taken the front plate of the master socket and the phone still doesnot work and this master socket is deffinatly connected to the line outside so it must be a BT problem??

I have just tried the phone on someone elses line and it works fine.

So i think i will just have to wait and see, its just that i really dont want to be without a line for too long and i just know its not going to work because they say an old line is active and when its my line its just going to be the same.

Also, can i order BB before i have the line in my name as it takes a while to get BB?

I would think you could order Broadband providing you know the telephone number of your new line

i don't think you can order broadband till the line is active in case the number changes before it becomes active

To order both PSTN and ADSL (phone + bb), I believe you can request a 'simultaneous provide'
