Best mutli-region player for DVD upscaling and divx

Any thoughts? Needs hdmi (1080i), and USB or SD for divx playback. Would like it from a reliable manufacturer, and be reasonably user friendly. Have been looking at the Pioneer dv-400v...

What's your budget? Would you be willing to spend more than the Pioneer? The Oppo's are very good for example (the 980H and 981HD), but they will probably set you back a bit more - they do some of the best upscaling you can get with DVD though.

That looks veeeery nice! Might be a bit much to get past the missus though, especially since I've just seen the pioneer for £70 from Superfi - the Oppo is over double.

What TV do you have? You probably won't get any benefit from an upscaling DVD player if you have a decent TV - if it's a cheap upscaling DVD player the picture will possibly be worse.

Does anyone know if the Pioneer plays DivX at native resolution? That is, if I have a 720p DivX file will it play it without mucking about with it? I have asked in the HD thread about the Helios player also at Superfi but have had no response.

I'll be using it (if I buy it!) with a Panasonic AE700 projector - no idea what its own upconversion is like.

DivX DVD players do not as rule play HD files - and that includes HDMI upscalers. If you play a 720p on most players you will get sound but no picture.

By 'HD' I mean any video file with resolution greater than 720 pixels horizontally or 576 pixels vertically.

Thanks for the feedback.

No picture is what happens on my current DivX player. The manual does say it will not go above 576p. I was hoping there was something out there that would exceed this but from my searches, apparently not - shame.

The upscaling on my TV is fine so I'll sit tight and wait for the DVD player that does the real thing rather than fiddle about!

Linksys has a range of KiSS media players that allow you to play HD files off disc or stream them over a network, but you are probably better off buying a cheap HTPC. No standalone player is ever going to have the versatility of an HTPC.

Totally agree..................htpc the way to go, every home that has a hd set should have one.

Of course it might also be worth considering a PS3. Don't be put off by the fact that it is a console as it is also an excellent Blu-ray player, DVD upscaler, divx player and allround media streamer, internet browser.... oh and it also plays games!

When you consider the whole package, the PS3 is actually remarkably good value - especially as it is actually pretty accomplished in all those areas (it is far from being like the PS2 with it's fairly ropey DVD playback - the PS3 is one of the class leaders for Blu-ray).

Oops - too late to edit my post - but I just remembered the thread title stated multi-region, which unfortunately isn't the case with the PS3. Never mind, move along!
