I don't agree with you, but I do understand what you are saying. I felt last year that the Josephs who had had the most experience on stage were almost at a disadvantage. Daniel was certainly accused of over-acting in one or two of his performances on ADWD, but having seen him on stage several times since then (yes, some of us do tear ourselves away from the tv and go to the theatre), I would say that he comes across brilliantly. Other Josephs who stood frozen to the spot, unable to sing and move at the same time (Keith Jack anyone?), probably came across better than expected because of the differences between a television studio and a theatre - less is more on television.
HOWEVER - there is a big difference between genuine emotion, and agonising writhing and contorting. Ashley was told to "rein it in a bit"as regards her hand and arm movements, so why couldn't Rachel do the same thing? At one point she was flapping her arms so much she looked like she was trying to take off. Some adjustments must be made to take into account how things appear on television; and ALW and the other judges must have a pretty good idea of whether they have the capacity to transfer their acting skills to a different medium or not.
