Agreed!

Was it Badfinger that did 'Reflections of my life'? Still brings a lump to my throat..

Sorry - scrap that: just (re)discovered that it was Marmalade...

That fall to the floor will have been choreographed - the camera people will have needed to know to expect it etc. So some prior planning will have gone into it, and maybe someone should have realised it was a bit too much?”

I understand your comments, but although I understand it is a TV show, the danger of doing a TV performance, may end up with someone getting the part and then when it comes to giving a theatrical performance, they cant, well atleas not at the standard required. It is a difficult situation to be in. Perform for the viewing public, or for the job your trrying to get. I was not being insulting I just think a lot of the people giving negative comments about rachels performance are those of the TV generation and I worry how many have actually been to the theatre and know what is required to connect with an auditorium of 1500 people.

Well I'm not a Rachel fan - and I'm very familiar with live theatre.

Obviously many of us will differ in our views of who will make the best Nancy; the best singer may not be the best actress and vice versa - and perhaps some will think it best to settle for the best all rounder. If we all agreed there would be little point in the show at all.

No doubt we'll debate it and try to explain how we arrived at our point of view - and then agree to disagree.

I was going to post this but you got there before me! Harry Nillson's version was perfect - Mariah Carey absolutely ruined it.

Blame the Beeb, not me!! I merely pasted in!

Ok this might sound a bit weird but did Ashleys performance on saturday night remind anyone else slightly of Harry Enfield in Kevin and Perry: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he_e2rAV3YQ)
The way she stomped down the stairs and the facial expressions when she sang reminded me distinctly of Kevin...kept waiting for her to turn around and say "this is sssssssssssooooooo unfair"

And the original by Nillson (sp?)is the only version I've ever liked. Some idiot (shows' commentator?)referred to it as Matria Carey's 'Without You'. Er...duh! Clueless.

The problem is that her posture is absolutely terrible - she needed help with that just as much as Jessie. She's bound to look like she's dragging herself about like a stroppy teenager if she can't even stand up straight.
That said, I don't think she is the worst by a long way.

I don't agree with you, but I do understand what you are saying. I felt last year that the Josephs who had had the most experience on stage were almost at a disadvantage. Daniel was certainly accused of over-acting in one or two of his performances on ADWD, but having seen him on stage several times since then (yes, some of us do tear ourselves away from the tv and go to the theatre), I would say that he comes across brilliantly. Other Josephs who stood frozen to the spot, unable to sing and move at the same time (Keith Jack anyone?), probably came across better than expected because of the differences between a television studio and a theatre - less is more on television.
HOWEVER - there is a big difference between genuine emotion, and agonising writhing and contorting. Ashley was told to "rein it in a bit"as regards her hand and arm movements, so why couldn't Rachel do the same thing? At one point she was flapping her arms so much she looked like she was trying to take off. Some adjustments must be made to take into account how things appear on television; and ALW and the other judges must have a pretty good idea of whether they have the capacity to transfer their acting skills to a different medium or not.
