So how about these characters? Twelve very different ones... Any ideas?

I realise I've been talking to myself for the last three posts, but oh, well
I just came across this picture on wikipedia. You've probably seen it before, but I hadn't and I just thought, look what a cute little lad Harry was!

Isn't he just adorable?!

From what I've seen on youtube and heard of the soundtrack he was great in Mary Poppins!

Are the BBC going to make any more shows with children involved like this one? I think it has worked well. Just wondering as my little niece (9 ys) would love a go at Annie.

Also Gareth appears to have made his Bebo profile public. However I have some doubts about whether it is really him even though he has been a member since October 2006. It says he is 13

Thanks for that tvaddict. Very much hope it's true, although if they could expand the parts a bit it would be better. Do the same children play the Workhouse boys and Fagin's gang? Surely it would make sense? Saw Joseph (the show, not the Oliver) recently and the brothers played ALL the parts so surely it would mean any of the Olivers who are in the Workhouse would also be in the gang and therefore get a fair amount of stage time?

Also if there's three understudies will there be one understudy assigned to each of the three leads. Think in Joseph there's choir A, B and C. If they do something similar then the 12 Olivers (if all 12 are in fact in it) would be divided into 3 groups. So who would be who's understudy / Charlie / Oliver in waiting?

Assuming, based on rumour and speculation, that 3 of the runners up will be Charlie - Jordan, Gareth and maybe Kwayadze, 3 will be understudies - Alex, Chester and Jonny (too good for understudies really but it'll be great experience for them and I'll take what I can get when it comes to opportunities to see them), and three Olivers in waiting - Joseph, Arthur and Sam. I'm guessing:

Gwion as Oliver (small and cute), Chester as understudy (paired with Gwion a lot from start, great voice and dancer, very visually different from Gwion if he's performing with him), Joseph as trainee Oliver (Arthur also small and cute, Joseph less like Gwion from back of Upper Circle than Sam), Jordan as Charlie (he's dark haired so more contrast with Gwion than with others, maybe too animated to be on with an also animated Oliver, ie Harry).

Harry as Oliver (best actor), Alex as understudy (one of best voices, visually different from Harry), Arthur as trainee (can be charismatic and mischievous, could learn lots from Harry), Gareth as Charlie (could be Kway either, but I'm spreading out the best vocalists, could also benefit from some of Harry's confidence rubbing off).

Laurence as Oliver (best vocally of 3), Jonny as understudy (but in expressive mode, although he seemed pally with Harry - think the understudies (TBC) are pretty interchangeable), Sam as trainee (stands out looks-wise and he's the only blonde in this combination, Laurence's character might calm him down a bit too), Kway as Charlie (brilliant voice, energy and presence).

I think I was in overanalysis withdrawal this past week! I've tried to come up with different combinations, but I have to say your grouping makes the most sense - it's the most balanced looks/personality/voice wise. I would personally think Harry & Jonny would work really well because they are so contrasting, there was chemistry on stage and I think Harry's experience/confidence can help Jonny - but Laurence and Alex would be too similar. In fact, Laurence, Chester and Alex probably should be spread out because they all have a similar kind of vocal quality and are imo the best vocalists. Similarly, Gwion, Sam and Arthur should be spread out as they are all small and similar (Gwion and Sam in particular would look identical from a distance!); Jordan, Harry and Kwayedza all have very strong stage presence so should maybe be spread out too. So basically, I just repeated everything you've just said

And iss1234, fine analysis! I hope you're right, that would be great! Also, I just hope there will be some confirmation on those rumours soon, because I still don't get the whole understudy thing. Productions like these usually don't work with understudies for the child-roles, because the kids basically understudy each other. I really do hope Oliver! is the exception to the rule though!

Laurence has a very good voice but the other two Olivers were among the weaker ones.

Chester and Jonathan were much better than Harry and Gwion whose voices are weak even for boys their age.

Thanks! I've been a bit busy with exams (9 more to go...!) so have been trying to cut down on Internet usage (trying is the key word here. ). That's one good thing about IDA finishing - I can get back to uh, my normal life.

Wow! Good luck with that! I'm having trouble getting back to my normal life! I was seriously addicted to IDA...

National Park, I agree that Laurence is the best vocalist but Harry and Gwion were chosen for their stage presence and, in Harry's case, his acting ability and in Gwion's case, his small-and-cute-ness (although it's lost on me). I don't think Cameron was looking for the best vocalists or it would have been Laurence, Chester and Alex, no doubt. He was looking for a confidence and ability to hold the stage, which all three can do now and I'm sure all of them will be able to do pretty soon. The task where they had to perform Where is Love did show all 3 looking very convincing and solid in their performances. The performance of Where is Love in the show was also spot on. Vocally Gwion and Harry are usually pretty good too (I'm not counting Singing in the Rain cos it was a ludicrous song choice and think all the boys, with the possible exception of Kway, might have struggled).

Very fond of Chester and Jonny too though, why it couldn't have been a 6, or 8, or 12 way part I don't know.

I dunno whether it is or not. During the show there were 3 profiles for him, maybe a couple he's done in the past. It seems really strange. It says his age is 16 in the age box. Theres loads of publicity pics for IDA in his photos.

I really really miss those boys Its just not the same Sat nights now. I can't even bring myself to watch Dr Who this week. Missed it last week due to the finals.

Gonna watch the IDA final tonight with my parents I think who missed it last week. Booking my tickets soon too!
