7.6 million if you consider the iplayer figures/ people watching it via internet as live

It was in quite an early slot, which might explain it

but that wasn't the final rating either....or indeed the overnight rating.

Nope it's not. It was about 8.9 which seems a more realistic figure

5.5m for The Rings of Akhaten - which is stable with the 7x02 rating from last year.

Would still expect it to comfortably get over 7m, maybe 7.5m, which is decent.

I agree... Around 7.2m 'ish ithink.

Hopefully the return of reptilian Martians will give the overnights a bit of a boost next week.

I can't imagine it will - even the silurians are more illustrious than the ice warriors and their return hardly helped the overnights in 2010. But the overnights are fine, good even - consistent with last year and the year before.

The most relevant time seems to be the Series 6 finale (The Wedding of River Song) which achieved 6.1 million in he overnights, and 7.67 consolidated - a timeshift of about 1.57 million, which is comparatively low when looked at from a Series 7 perspective.

I assume you are including the xmas special in there? Because excluding xmas specials I make it the highest rated since the The Impossible Astronaut (8.86m)

So that's a timeshift of over 2 million - brilliant.

I don't think the return of The Ice Warriors is going to have any ratings effect. The Silurians' return in 2010 was the lowest overnight ever for the news series, and I think the Ice Warriors are about on par with them as recurring monsters.

Having said that, it does look like a very good episode. I wonder what effect "next time" trailers have on ratings - for example, last week's next time trailer for Rings of Akhaten was very poor IMO, revealing nothing about the plot. Tonight's was much more swish. The best next time trailer I've ever seen was for The Stolen Earth, and that was a big success. Any thoughts on that?

Yeah, that'll be interesting. I'm a little worried that so many people seem to have disliked it that it might slow the momentum of the series.

I actually thought it was a good solid episode, I'm not sure what people were expecting. I have to admit though, that Matt's speech sent my enjoyment through the roof for those 5 minutes, which has affected my enjoyment of the whole thing.

Still, as long as AI isn't too far below normal, should be fine.

I think an early start and a warm hot sunny day (nearly 30c) had something to do with the low overnight rating for those episodes. (Same happened to The Satan Pit ratings.)

And I think the Ice Warriors are more well know then the Silurians...... so there!

Taking into account that the series will finish mid May...i dont think this problem will occur over the next 6 weeks Which will be good.

and yes the Ice Warriors are more prolific as well as the fact Next Time trailer was so great
