I thought it would lose viewers. (fail!) I just had a vibe that people were getting fed up with the second part of this series.

Thankfully, I was proved wrong!

i think the AI of 84 should have reassured you on that point, sometimes we can all become a bit insular on this forum and assume we are in tune with the wider audience when often times we are not

It's not an episode i will be in a rush to watch again, but it does seem to have been relatively well received outside of fandom, if not quite as well as most episodes are.

Interestingly, my niece and my sister both really enjoyed it, my niece in particular was quite engrossed with it, though possibly because as a six year old she found the little girl in it very relatable. And my sister likes the emotional episodes the best, lol!

If you believed (sadly me!) the comments on the Digital Spy review or Twitter during and after the show, you would think the show is absolutely terrible and would be lucky to get to 2m.

Just shows you... Take no notice of fans comments on the interweb!

Rings got 7.39m - Down on the massive timeshift that got Dinosaurs on a spaceship to 7.57m from 5.5 - but up on the timeshift that got night terrors from 5.5 to 7.07

Not sure if 7.39 is the official BARB figure, is it? Is that just the full slot consolidated average posted on the main ratings thread? If so we may need to wait for a figure that takes account of the precise start and end times.

Does anyone else always smile when we take about "timeshifted" ratings??

7.45 for rings is the actual number.

Yes was going to say the figure you initially posted didn't tally with what I was seeing. Timeshifted close to 2 million there in the end, nice

What's interesting is that including on the night timeshifting, this episode practically got half of its viewership by people catching it later. That's why DW may well benefit from a lead in from other shows but isn't the greatest lead in FOR other shows.

The concept of time shifting is higher than the intellectual capability of their journalists to understand

What doctor who's lowest ever overnight?

I assume you mean for post 2005 doctor who?

I don't have the exact data to hand as I am out and about, but pretty sure it was closing time, with around 4.5 million up against an England world cup match.

lowest final ratings remain for either the impossible planet or the Saten pit ( can't remember which) with around 6 million.

Yes I was thinking post 2005. The impossible planet only rated around six million in the finals! Hmm. And I did think closing time had gone below five million. Thanks

Closing Time actually got 5.3 - the hungry earth is the lowest overnight so far with 4.5

I am sure it was Closing Time, not a great story, that went up against a Soccer Match.

Whats the biggest ever timeshift for an episode?
Muttley76
14-04-2013
Ha it was actually The Lodger i was thinking of not Closing Time (confusing two interchangeable Corden episodes there) , - 4.6 million timeshifting to 6.44 million.

you are correct though, upon checking The Hungry Earth faired slightly worse - 4.5 time-shifting to 6.49 million.

I assume it was a scorching day or something, because DW still had an overnight share of 32.5% and 6.5 million won the night.

1. The Impossible Astronaut - 2.34m
2. The Snowmen - 2.28m
3. Bells of Saint Johns - 2.26m

and to conclusively answer the lowest final ratings question:

6.08m - The Satan Pit
6.27m - Silence in the Library
6.32m - The Impossible Planet

Then The Hungry Earth and The Lodger as mentioned above.

The Snowmen is actually the biggest timeshift for any TV broadcast ever. It went from 5.74m live to 9.87m. Of course a large amount of that 4.13m shift was part of the VOSDAL figure. But it's The Snowmen that technically holds the record for all television.

The Impossible Astronaut is in second place, going from 4.75m live to 8.86m (a shift of 4.11m).

whilst it is fascinating to see just how many people watch Doctor Who on the day but outside of it's timeslot, anyone that does view the show "on the day" is counted in the overnights, therefore the actually timeshift is officially as I mention above.

Well, actually timeshift isn't as simple as final figure minus overnight (or even final figure minus overnight plus VOSDAL). The final figure accounts for the precise start and end times (and in the case of commercial channels, removes the adverts!).

The technical definition of timeshift DOES include the VOSDAL figure, so the real timeshift for - say - The Snowmen is over 4 million, not just 2 million or so.

But I am being a pedant, admittedly! :P
