An average of 10.2 million and that's just the overnights

That doesn't include cinema attendance. The screening I went to was sold out and I'm sure others were. It'll be great to find out how many people saw it on the big screen, too.

Haha X Factor we thrashed them! That's a really low figure for them. If it's 10.8m overnight I wonder what the overall figure will be!

Cannot but also CAN believe it and so well deserved a truly remarkable and breathtakingly beautiful episode that defnitely justified the millions of viewers...wonder what the final total will be with cinema goers (inc.myself) and week repeats...that is incredible <3.

General opinion seems to be that it was a fantastic result for Dr Who. Lord Hall of Birkenhead will be performing cartwheels.

I'm actually a bit miffed it was beaten by Strictly, which was awful last night.

Remember though, that a lot of those who would have watched on TV will have gone and paid to see it in the cinema.

IMO all UK cinema viewing figures for the 7.50pm showing should be added to the tally to make it fair.

The later screenings, the worldwide viewers and the catchup should be counted seperately.

So how does this overnight rating compare with Doctor Who's highest ratings since it came back in 2005?

I think what I'm interested in is finding out how close it can get, once the timeshifted officials are in, to the highest rated episodes since 2005.
Is there a ranking list anywhere that shows how they stand at the moment?

DS front page reports 500,000 cinema tickets sold worldwide.

That's a big number.

Don't have the overnights but can will find them, here's the top official ratings.

Top 5 Official Ratings
1. 13.31m - Voyage of the Damned (25/12/07)
2. 13.10m - The Next Doctor (25/12/08)
3. 12.27m - The End of Time (Part 2) (01/01/10)
4. 12.11m - A Christmas Carol (25/12/10)
5. 12.04m - The End of Time (Part 1) (25/12/09)

The Day of the Doctor should at least be 3rd on that list with timeshift. (That's a really poor list imo, I only enjoyed one episode there and even then I wouldn't rank it with my favourites.)

Edit:
Top 5 Overnight Ratings
1. 12.2m - Voyage of the Damned (25/12/07)
2. 11.71m - The Next Doctor (25/12/08)
3. 10.4m - The End of Time (Part 2) (01/01/10)
4. 10.3m - A Christmas Carol (25/12/10)
5. 10.18m - The Day of the Doctor (23/11/13)

£1.7 million worth of ticket sales in the UK alone.

And thats just from a limited release for one day, all evening time.

Would have placed it top 3 in the film chart last week for a full weeks takings, for context.

Pretty amazing stuff.

I think some people are putting the cart before the horse here. Just as it was hard to predict how high the overnight ratings would be, so it is now hard to predict if the higher overnights will impact significantly on the time shift. It may time shift less than the average episode (which is around 2 million these days) because it had such a high overnight,

Excellent! I look forward to Mark Kermode on Radio 5Live trying to explain this one away.

(He was scathing about Dredd 3D, the git).

It will undoubtedly add some weight to the touted film project thats been lurking in the background for some years.

Thanks for that.
So it did extremely well even compared to the highest rated episodes.

I wonder if its possible for it to timeshift a lot. Because apparently Doctor Who timeshifts a lot more nowadays than it used to. Especially since it's the 50th Anniversary episode.
Because there may even be a lot of people who watched it elsewhere like at the cinema and set to record it at home.

It's very reassuring to know that the Peter Capaldi Doctor is being set up for a flying start and Moffat doesn't need to feel compromised by having to inhibit his writing freedom due to low ratings.

Well it's worth bearing in mind that a huge majority of hardcore fans didn't watch it all on TV last night and were yet to watch it at the time those ratings were posted. I was one of them and have now watched it again today, as will pretty much everyone who went to the screenings, probably. So that's about 300k or something right there. There is no way it won't hit 12m.

Great Ratings.

IIRC I guessed 9 million in a speculation thread on here and I thought I was being slightly optimistic

Should be over 12 M in the final figures but I wouldn't be surprised if it was nearer 13M.

I'm not excluding them (i was one myself ), not ruling out it can add that sort of figure, just trying to manage expectations. It would be very sad if people ended up disappointing themselves by setting the bar too high here after such a terrific result. My point is that this wasn't an average episode thus we can't assume it will follow the rules of an average episode either in terms of over night or time shifted ratings.

If Yog is able to give us the first day data tomorrow we can make a more informed guess how it might time shift.

Surely the 7:50 start time means that a lot people will have been out. After all, many people who are interested in the show aren't interested enough to say in to watch it. This isn't so much the case with the Christmas specials and episodes shown earlier in the evening.

I predict a big time shift!

I'm not being totally serious and am putting 2 and 2 together and getting 3.1472 but Moffat did say recently that on the back of Night of the Doctor he thinks Paul McGann will be getting a leading man role in a major production.

So outside of the xmas shows with the captive audience, it is the highest rated DW since the reboot.

Ah, well that's where the overnight figures can be slightly misleading.

They're not just a measure of how many people were watching at 7:50pm, they also include anyone who watched any time-shifted recordings on the same day.

If anyone got home and watched their recording before the cut-off time, they'll be included in the overnight figures. If not they'll be added when the final 7-day figures are released.
