The weekly reach figures (without iPlayer) have been adjusted to take that into account. Thanks to the BBC we know that around 95% of the BBC Three viewers are new/unique.

No idea about iPlayer however - though I'd bet that the 95% figure applies there too (as I'd say the main reason to watch iPlayer would be having missed the show on TV).

That's good to know. I agree your probably right that roughly the same figure would apply to the repeat iplayer views too.

What I think it shows is we have to become more sophesticated in our anaylises of the figures. I think the days when the overnight ratings can be taken at face value are gone, tbh. By the time series 5 rolls around I imagine this will be more the case than ever...

Over nights from The Stolen Earth: 7.4 (38.3%)

Good result on a very pleasant day weather wise, and some two million ahead of all competition.....!

What actually amused me the most was the fact that because the Murray match caused the Weakest Link to be moved to BBC2, after the match finished they showed a repeat episode of some rubbish sitcom I'd never heard on to fill the gap till Doctor Who started, and that STILL got higher ratings than the movie premiere being shown on ITV, presumbly because a lot of people decided they might as well leave BBC1 on until Doctor Who came on...

It was all the Doctor Who fans checking out Ryan Sampson's comedy stylings.

Superb ratings for last night.

Just as a point of comparison, the over night ratings of this episode are the second highest overnights for the penultimate episode of a series yet, so not quite sure what your point is there...

It wil probably also end up with over half a million more viewers than The Sound Of The Drums once we get the final figures in too

That was it's final figure. The overnights were 6.9 million for TSOTD. The final figures for TSP are likely to be around 8.1 million going on the average timeshift ratings.

hmmm...I think that's a bit of a reach. I'd say 8.4 overnight, final figure of 9.1 million is more realistic. It's never a good idea to set the bar to high for yourself, imho. We'll see.

After the 13 million plus for Christmas Day, and with the build-up for this one, and the knowledge that the Doctor has started regeneration, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see them exceed 10 million.

Yeah but that 13 million was in the middle of winter on the day of the year most people are liable to be on the sofa watching tv after over eating and drinking all day long....

It's a bit different when your talking about an episode going out in the middle of summer on the night of the week people are most likely to be going out for the night....

Not saying it's impossible, but I don't know that it will be quite so high as that!

That's a pretty amazing result...pretty sure that means that once again series 4 out rates series 3.....I shall have to check back first!

Series 3 vs series 4 final ratings(excluding Christmas specials):

***** series 3 series 4
episode 1 - 8.71 :9.14
episode 2 - 7.23 : 9.04
episode 3 - 8.41 : 7.5
episode 4 - 6.69 :7.06
episode 5 - 6.96 : 6.53
episode 6 - 7.19 :7.33
episode 7 - 7.41 : 8.41
episode 8 - 7.74: 6.27
episode 9 - 7.21 :7.84
episode 10 - 6.62:8.05
episode 11 - 7.84: 8.09
Average ----- 7.46:7.75

So that makes it 8/11 episodes from series 4 with higher final ratings than series 3, while series 4 continues to average more than 300,000 viewers more per episode than series 3 - a gap that will only further widen next week, since the overnights for The Stolen Earth were almost as high as the final ratings for The Sound of the Drums.

Michael Grade last Saturday presided over the worst Saturday audience share ever for ITV.

Bet he hates Doctor Who even more now!
As Nelson Muntz of The Simpsons would say -
"HA HA!"
