What actually counts towards the time shifted value? I've never actually thought about this.
Is it just recording it on the likes of Sky+ and watching it later or is there more involved?
Does the iPlayer value count at all to the final figure?

Here's the official description

Quote:
“This includes playback through PVRs, DVD-recorders or VCRs as well as via catch-up services available through the TV.”

We're now due our on-the-web iPlayer stats for August...

***

Incidentally, just saw the Eastenders overnights for September in the Ratings Thread

Quote:
“2014 - 6.10m (30.5%)
2013 - 6.72m (31.8%)
2012 - 7.14m (32.6%)
2011 - 7.69m (34.9%)
2010 - 8.41m (37.3%)
2009 - 8.06m (37.9%)”

Everything changes..

Consolidated ratings are seriously down for Eastenders as well though. Rather in line with the overnight slide actually, so it looks like timeshifts are fairly steady.

I won't be counting towards the BARB ratings for the rest of the series as I'll watch it on my laptop, as will a lot of students at university.

Does that mean that live iPlayer viewings aren't counted towards it?

I really do not understand the 'Ratings' these days. They are all crap!!

In 'my day'' in the 70's it was all BARB or whatever.
Programmes were recorded and printed in 'The Sun'(or any other newspaper available) every Saturday! Shows like Crossroads or Love Thy Neighbour would get 14 million viewers! They did this by asking people on the streets and bugging peoples homes (with their permission!)
How on Earth can they get ratings nowadays with all this digital stuff?? Are our PVR recordings recorded? Is it via cable or t'internet ??

Just over 5000 households in the UK are members of the BARB panel. Their viewing habits are monitored and because they are supposed to be a representative sample, viewing figures from them are measured and scaled up to the entire population.

You don't count towards viewing figures unless you're on the BARB panel. If you are, I think there's a little box installed in your house or something like that.

Trying to work out how many BARB households watched a 4.8m rated episode. 960, or there about?

If the 5000 or so households with a BARB box watched Doctor Who, what would happen? 26 million overnight?

Have I just got it very wrong?

If everybody within a household with a BARB box watched Doctor Who, you'd get an overnight of 58m

We live in interesting times, indeed. Now I just need to locate them.

I suppose that for all sorts of reasons, we're not likely to see a super accurate ratings systems implemented for some time? This being a time when people are paranoid that their Xbox might be surveying them.

For those who may be interested, the 28 day barb data is now available. I know we haven't got much to compare it to (the only other DW eps I have this data for are the 2 specials last year) but just thought some people might like to see it:

Deep Breath: 9.529m (7 day consolidated: 9.169m)
Into the Dalek: 7.672m (7 day consolidated: 7.286m)

Thanks Yog...is there any adjustment to come based on precise broadcast times rather than the 5 minute chop?

So probably going to come out equal to or slightly lower than TimeHeist indicating no great benefit from the Strictly lead in.

There will be, but only a small one of around 30k increase

4.81m for Kill The Moon. No boost from a Strictly with 9m viewers. Interesting.

At least the viewing figures are consistent. And Doctor Who does offer viewers a genuine choice from X-Factor which they wouldn't get if Strictly was up against it.

7.14m for The X-Factor is even more interesting. If any Saturday night show has ratings worries, it ain't Doctor Who.

Is there any increase, typically, for the X-Factor overnights to the finals?

As much as I enjoy Strictly, it was a struggle to go straight into Doctor Who after over 2 ours of dancing without a break!

The live audience are obviously set. The numbers watching it on catch up are drifting down so I think that's the more interesting figure.

X Factor collapsed last night. Very interesting.

I'll leave far greater rating 'experts' to answer that one but even to the casual eye, that figure must be one it's lowest ever,

From the ratings thread in the main forum

Doctor Who: 4.82m (21.5%)
Casualty: 4.74m (23.8%)

Ouch, nearly beaten in numbers and beaten by share though I understand from the trailers that Casualty was having another staff accident/cast cull last night which usually brings in the punters.
