Yep... I think the overnight should be around 4.75m 'ish. That still around the series overnight average isn't it.

Those final five minutes will already have been taking off the overnights with tapechecking, and it only started one minute early.

I think what really affected it was the gap between it starting and Strictly finishing. Strictly has been under running this year, apart from last week which finished on time (which just happened to be when Doctor Who rose), so there's been a good few minutes of promos before DW starts allowing the casual audience to get away. Another thing that could have helped last week compared to this week is that X Factor had already been on for an hour last week, therefore some Strictly viewers who would have normally turned to X Factor stuck with Doctor Who instead starting X Factor half way through.

Do ratings take into account iPlayer viewings? Only asking because I have no idea how tis all worked out

I still don't understand where the 4.60 figure came from. I understand about tapechecking, but that doesn't happen until later next week doesn't it? And why didn't the Doctor Who news page (www.doctorwhonews.net) among others, report that figure?

Through TV, yes - on the web and elsewhere, they do not.

Web iPlayer stats are released seperately at the end of the month. So far we only have Deep Breath's numbers - 2.06m hits. Unique viewers for episode 1 are likely in the 10 million area.

BARB keep saying that they're going to start including all of iPlayer, but it's slow going.

A slight dip in the overnights. I think the show is beginning to see the impact of the X-Factor live shows.

Still, it is getting good viewing figures over all and is actually offering viewers a genuine choice at the time of the evening too.

I'm sad that 'Listen' overall views are so low, by far my favourite episode this series and one of my favourites ever.

I still hold with the theory that it would do better being shown before SCD [Take a look at the overnights for Pointless] Plus this mild weather we are having atm [Here in the South at least] That imho impacts on the overnights...

A cold spell and those overnights will be well over 5m imho.

And as you've shown in your other thread it is still a gem in the BBC line up. It is something the BBC will be conscious of especially while the viewing figures are so steady. Its one of their critically best received shows currently on and S8 is possibly most well received yet.

I know in this day & age there are loads of ways to catch up but by having it on so late they're missing out on the young audience. My 9 year old is a massive DW fan but 3 weeks in a row now she's gone to bed 10 or 15 minutes before the show has finished as she can't keep her eyes open.

I'm old enough to have grown up watching the end of Tom Baker's run and the whole of the Peter Davison era on a Saturday tea-time but back then if the show had been on around 8:30pm I doubt I would ever have started watching it and that could be a future problem for the show in years to come. If young kids aren't into the show now because it's on too late are they going to watch it when they grow up?

That's a good point, although I would argue Dr Who wasn't on when I grew up (well I was 4 when the run ended, so I wouldn't have watched it) but it was just the legacy it left behind that made my generation curious and then once it started back up - excited about it. It does seem silly to alienate a big target audience when the show is broadcast though.

It doesn't bother me that they've moved it later but I think maybe its slightly later than it should be. But then we can blame the SCD juggernaut for stealing so much of the Saturday night. I think between 19-20:30 is best. That way the kids can stay up just late enough to catch it live. And don't forget the students and twenty-something's who will have grown up with New Who. Put it on at 19:00 and you can watch it prior to a night out. The time its on now is slightly too late in that respect and one might argue would work better on a Sunday. Of course now people better understand timeshift and catchup its kind of irrelevant and only effects the overnights. As is shown for the most part the viewing figures are the same. People just watch later.

Thats a shame, there appears to be a growing increasing amount of international audience watching on IPlayer as evidenced by Youtube ...

Tapechecking to the nearest 5 minutes is done with the overnights, so if something is meant to start 20:20 but actually starts at 20:23 the first 5 minutes are taking off the rating as it's closer to 20:25 than 20:20. Tapechecking to the nearest minute (possibly second, I'm not sure) doesn't happen until the official ratings.

Some websites don't have access to tapechecked ratings, Doctor Who News must be one of them.

I got confused because usually I get the overnight from doctorwhonews.net or doctorwhotv.co.uk and then come on here and the numbers are the same. This is the first week where that didn't happen, and it's not like this is the first week with tapechecking!

I don't get this, of course there are people who watch and then rewatch on iplayer catch up, not me, waste of bandwith so I record and watch again. I could easily manipulate the iplayer count assuming its done by ip address, just change the ip and already I got a double count if I watch twice on iplayer.

Nothing sophisticated or scientific about ratings count, all basically guesstimates based on what 5000 homes with little boxes do.
