The story was heavily enjoyed by the general audience, which is what the show should always be about. The hardcore fans need to appreciate that they aren't the be all and end all of the show.

Indeed, as a fan I didn't really enjoy it and would have voted poor but for the wonderful Capaldi but the husband who is definitely a casual viewer(or more accurately forced to sit down and shut up and just let me enjoy it) turned to me as it finished and said 'That was really lovely I really enjoyed that' and was surprised at my horrified face.

2.11m. Biggest timeshift since 'Listen'.

7-day consolidated average of 7.25m after nine episodes.

That's a consolidated figure yes? So I'm confused as to 25.5% of what exactly?

Yes, agree absolutely. The show won't succeed if only hard-core fans are watching/enjoying. And mostly I think we enjoy the same sort of stuff as more general viewers. I think we are just way more picky. I'm going to watch Forest again to see if I like it more second time round.

Of all the people who watched or have PVR'd shows which were originally broadcast in that timeslot, 25.5% watched Doctor Who.

Out of curiosity, before Series 4 had it's sudden 8m peaks, was there a panic over the great S1-3 ratings decline?

On average, the four years (so far) of the Moffat era has dropped 80k more viewers than the first three years of the RTD era. It's a shame we couldn't replicate those peaks this year - but if that isn't a negligible drop-off, I don't know what is...

Moffat - the swine.

I'm afraid I won't be doing that.
Apart from the fundamental suspension of disbelief problems, the dreadfully written and delivered dialogue from the "cool kids" will I'm quite certain not make me cringe any less on a repeated viewing!
It was even worse than in Nightmare in Silver, and that's saying something!

2.16m - it's overnight was 4.55m.

All sub-5m overnights, in size order:

4.54m > 6.49m (+1.95m) + 43.0% - The Hungry Earth (5.08)
4.55m > 6.71m (+2.16m) + 47.5% - Flatline (8.09)
4.56m > 6.44m (+1.88m) + 41.2% - The Lodger (5.11)
4.61m > 6.47m (+1.86m) + 40.3% - The Crimson Horror (7.11)
4.70m > 6.64m (+1.94m) + 41.3% - Nightmare in Silver (7.12)
4.81m > 7.01m (+2.20m) + 45.7% - Listen
4.82m > 6.91m (+2.09m) + 43.4% - Kill the Moon (8.07)
4.89m > 6.52m (+1.63m) + 33.3% - Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS (7.10)
4.89m > 6.82m (+1.93m) + 39.5% - The Caretaker
4.92m > 6.99m (+2.07m) + 42.1% - Time Heist (8.05)

Second only to Listen in timeshift numbers, from a sub-5m overnight but, in terms of percentage increase, the biggest. All in all, that's an especially impressive catch-up for an episode that started with the second lowest overnight of all.

Flatline overtook 14 episodes that rated lower in final ratings.

thing about rating is if there is a drop of 500 it NOT mean less people watched it, those 500 may have watched it at friends house or something so not counts.

Apologies, I took the 4.60m figure from @tvratingsuk on twitter, which is usually very reliable: https://twitter.com/TVRatingsUK/stat...56203592388608

4.60m was the tape-checked overnight from 20:25 to 21:05. Apparently.

DS reported it as 4.6m as well.

It's all seemed quite consistent this year. In series 6 and series 7, it tended to start really high, and drop steadily until the end of the series. This year, it started off pretty low but has been generally steady, around the 5 mil mark for most of the series.

Same for final figures. They have been dropping somewhat, but never alarmingly so.

So unless something dramatic happens either way in the next two weeks, the Series should average, say, 7.2m/7.3m-ish? That's pretty consistent with previous years. Obviously as a fan I'd prefer higher, but that's okay. And the BBC will be taking into account the Live+7 figures.

Sorry to be thick, but does the latter figure take into account all BBC i-player viewings during the week? Obviously Who does well on iplayer. (Flatline's still No.13 in the Top 40 most popular as I write.)

I think you may enjoy it more now you're not expecting it to be an epic Doctor Who story. It's a perfectly fine and rather sweet little fable.

It's definitely not your normal sort of Doctor Who episode. In it's own way, it does work for me as a piece of entertainment.

Only iPlayer through your television - not on the Internet

The Internet hits are released one month at a time. We only have Deep Breath's 2.06m for now - but have no bearing on the ratings. BARB has plans to include them, but it's all quiet.

Latest AI is 83!

So apparently, people liked the episode better than almost half the current season, including Listen!
Oh casual viewers, will I ever understand you?
