that was the series 4 opener your quoting, last night was 8.3 million...
I'm very interested to see what the AI will be, because that will be a good way to measure how much the episode resonated with the wider audience as well as the more hardcore fanbase.

Definitely - the quality of the episode, plus the amount of questions it raised, plus a lot of people still haven't made their minds up about Matt and Karen, plus the huge trailer at the end... I reckon all this will mean we won't get as much of a drop-off in figures as usual come next week. I hope so
Based on overnight ratings, it was the joint least watched season opener since 2005. But it's the same number as the one who watched DT's first regular series episode.
If there's going to be a disagreement about it, can you post a source? All I could find from Google was that The Gallifrey Times (http://thegallifreytimes.blogspot.co...t-ratings.html) report unofficial overnights of 8.3m. But there's no reason to believe official overnights (if those exist?) won't differ.
EDIT: oh, you've posted a source either while I was typing or before I even started typing it with me being so ignorant as not to notice. I wonder what could explain the disparity?

Those where the final figures, not overnights., so you can't use that as a comparison. Plus it's a special not a regular episode. The ratings for series openers are a better point of comparison and these figures fit in with the sort of figures we have come to expect. Would imagine final figures in the region of 9 million here.

8.3m was originally posted by the GallifreyNewsBase source, but that was a mistake. They changed it to 8.0m.
But other websites still have the incorrect 8.3m in their articles.

thats odd, has the figure been revised? It was definitely 8.3 million initially.
Looking at a few sites, it appears it was actually around 8.3 including HD viewers, but it'll be seven days before the figures for those who recorded it to watch later can be estimated. Not bad, I'd say. Where has the revised 7.7 come from?

To be honest, although it's good, because it means there's just as much interest in the new Dr and new team as there was with DT.
BUT what's really important is what happens now with the trend which will determine if Smith, Gillan and Moffat are regarded as a winning team by the public.

I can't help but wonder if these figures might have been better had the series premiered sooner (i.e. not on a holiday weekend) ...
